INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (LourdesAthletics.com) – The Lourdes University men's wrestling team competed in the Indiana Little State Open on December 6-7, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
The tournament saw standout performances from several Gray Wolves, including Will Speight, who claimed the 1st place title at 184 pounds. Speight dominated his way to the championship, finishing the tournament undefeated with a perfect record, earning 23 team points through victories by tech fall and decision.
Nick Rodriguez, competing at 133 pounds, earned a 7th place finish with a 3-3 record. Rodriguez won his first two matches, including a 19-3 tech fall victory and a fall over Indiana Tech's Zimani Malomboza, before falling to Tanner Tishner and James Armstrong Jr. He concluded his tournament with a hard-fought 12-8 decision win over Carson Ochs of McKendree to secure his spot in the 7th place match.
At 141 pounds, Cole McKinley placed 5th, scoring 19.0 team points. McKinley started strong with a fall over Indiana Tech's John Stivers and a tech fall over Matt Englehardt from West Liberty. After a loss in the quarterfinals, McKinley came back strong in the consolation rounds, scoring a fall over Michael Tharpe of Indiana Tech and a tech fall victory over Eli Peyton of Cumberlands to finish in 5th place.
Carter Kroll finished in 4th place at 197 pounds, earning 15.5 team points. Kroll's early victories included a tech fall and a fall, but his tournament ended after a fall in the semifinals and an injury default loss in the 3rd place match to Clay Guenin from Marian.
Ty Cobb, competing at 285 pounds, also placed 7th and scored 11.5 team points. Cobb had a bye in the first round and lost his initial match to Wabash's Titus Waters. He fought back with three consecutive falls before losing in the consolation semifinals. Cobb wrapped up the tournament with a 3:38 fall over Jackson Barnhart of McKendree to finish in 7th place.
Lourdes showed strong individual results at the Indiana Little State Open, with William Speight's title performance leading the charge. The team's overall effort helped secure several top finishes, with contributions from Rodriguez, McKinley, Kroll, and Cobb.
