Lourdes wrapped up its three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon dropping a 69-65 decision to Indiana Tech inside the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The 13
th-ranked Gray Wolves were never able to take the lead in the second half despite pulling even on two different occasions.
"There were too many little things, especially at the end, that become big things," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "Give Indiana Tech credit. They are a good team, but I feel like we should have won this game. We missed too many free throws. We missed eight and lost by four. We need to take care of the little things."
Lourdes built a five-point lead, 20-15, with nine minutes to play in the first half after a three-pointer by
Jakiel Wells (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) and the Gray Wolves maintained a lead until the final three minutes of the opening half. Indiana Tech closed the stanza on a 7-2 run, with a three-point play at the buzzer giving the Warriors a 32-28 lead at the break.
Indiana Tech extended its lead to as many as eight in the second half, holding a 49-41 edge with 13 minutes to play. Lourdes fought back with seven straight points over the next three minutes to pull within one before eventually tying the game at 51 on a three-pointer by
Nic Borojevich (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.).
After Indiana Tech (16-10, 14-6 WHAC) retook the lead, the Gray Wolves tied the contest again, this time at 53, at the 9:21 mark. The Warriors would score the next four points though to take the lead for good. The advantage grew back to eight, 67-59, with 2:45 remaining before Lourdes made one final push. Six straight points capped a jumper by
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) made it a two-point game with a minute to play.
Lourdes forced a stop defensively and had a chance to tie, but a missed jumper with 13 seconds left allowed Indiana Tech to make two free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) led Lourdes with 22 points while Holifield added 15 more. Lourdes committed just four turnovers in the game but shot just 39.1% from the floor, including 6-of-25 (24%) from three-point range. The Gray Wolves were also just 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the free throw line.
Lucas Lyyski led four Warriors in double figures with 17 points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Javel Lewis added 16 points as Indiana Tech shot 45.9% from the field and was 10-of-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
Lourdes (19-5, 15-5) will return to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Wednesday evening for the final home game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. with Senior Night activities taking place prior to the game.
