For the second straight match Lourdes registered a 3-0 sweep on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"This was a great team win as we played very efficiently," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We had a scheme going into the match and maintained it. We were able to limit their offense dramatically."
Lourdes hit .329 on the evening with
Vinicius Lopes (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Osvaldo Carvalho) and
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) both putting down 12 kills while hitting .476 and .400 respectively.
Joey Bianco (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder H.S.) directed the offense, handing out 32 assists while also sharing the team lead with eight digs defensively.
The opening set had 10 ties and four lead changes before Lourdes went on a 9-1 run to break open a 13-13 deadlock. The Gray Wolves would hit .462 in the stanza.
In the second, the Cougars were held to a -.056 hitting mark and the Gray Wolves scored points with nine of their 10 serves in the set. Lourdes then raced out to a 6-1 lead in the third and never trailed on the way to completing the sweep.
Brayden Moyars (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) also matched the team lead with eight digs while
Reshawn Allen (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego H.S.) was in on four of the team's nine blocks.
Riley Barretto led Mount Vernon Nazarene (7-2, 5-2 WHAC) with seven kills while Jaysen Matsumoto had 23 assists for an offense that hit just .098 on the night while picking up eight digs.
Lourdes (4-7, 4-1) returns to the road on Friday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle Aquinas. The opening serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
