Day 1 Results
Will Speight (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) advanced to the quarterfinals at the NAIA National Championships on Thursday evening to lead five Lourdes grapplers at the event held inside Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan.
As a team the Gray Wolves managed just three points on the opening day of competition and are in a tie for 35
th place in a field of 55 schools. Life leads the way with 52 points, 2.5 more than second place Grand View.
"This is not the outcome that we have been training to see here at the national tournament," head coach
Dock Kelly III said afterwards. "While our guys battled hard, we made too many mistakes and we failed to put ourselves in position to win matches."
Speight, seeded fourth at 184 pounds, drew an opening round bye in the morning session. He took control in his evening second round bout, posting a 16-3 major decision over Rylin Burns of Montana State-Northern, who had upset the No. 13 seed in the opening round.
"William Speight did wrestle well in his match, and he is locked in for tomorrow," Kelly added. "We will have him ready to wrestle in the quarterfinal round."
Nick Rodriguez (Toledo, Ohio/Clay H.S.), the tournament's 12
th seed, suffered a loss in a narrow 10-9 decision in his opening round bout at 125 pounds against David Corretjer of Central Baptist. After a bye in the first consolation round, Rodriguez returned at night and suffered a 21-4 technical fall loss to sixth-seeded Trevor Marsman of Cornerstone.
Derick Coleman (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde H.S.), who was making his nationals debut at 165 pounds, drew 14
th-seeded Dayton Hill of Ottawa (Kan.) in the opening round. In a closely contest decision, Coleman fell 5-2. He also drew a bye in the first consolation round and returned Thursday night to face 13
th-seeded Hunter Hobbs of Providence (Mont.). Coleman lost that match in a narrow 3-1 decision.
Cole McKinley (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) and
Carter Kroll (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario H.S.) both had their championships come to an end in the morning session on Thursday.
McKinley, at 133 pounds, was competing on the national stage for the first time in his career. He drew third-seeded Sammy Shires of Cumberland (Tenn.) in the opening round, suffering a 21-6 tech fall. He returned to the mat later in the session to face Roman De La Cruz of Saint Mary (Kan.), dropping the match in a 19-2 tech fall.
Kroll, competing at the national championships for the second straight season at 197 pounds battled Lindsey Wilson's Nikolas Perovic in round one, suffering the loss in an 8-5 decision. He then turned around to face John Lovett of Reinhardt to close out the morning, competing in another tight match before dropping an 8-6 decision.
Speight will return to the mat on Friday for the quarterfinal round as he faces fifth-seeded Tyson Beauperthuy of Doane. Action begins at noon inside Hartman Arena.
