Lourdes had to battle back from a two-set-to-one deficit to defeat Goshen on Friday evening, 25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 25-16, 15-6 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for the Gray Wolves' seventh consecutive victory.
The 13
th-ranked Gray Wolves hit .317 for the night but needed to swing better than .450 in each of the final two sets to pull out the win.
The Gray Wolves raced out to a 16-9 lead in the opening set and withstood a late Maple Leafs' 9-3 run to take the early lead in the match. Sets two and three both had 14 ties in them. Goshen erased three set points in the second and scored the final five points of the stanza to even the match before closing with the final four points of the third to take the lead in the contest.
Lourdes hit .481 in the fourth behind 17 kills and never trailed to force the decisive fifth set. The Gray Wolves jumped out to a 7-1 lead and then scored the final five points in the frame. In the fifth, Lourdes took a quick 6-1 lead and never looked back on the way to completing the comeback. The Gray Wolves hit .588 with 11 kills and just one miscue in the fifth while holding Goshen to -.056.
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) led four Gray Wolves in double figures with 19 kills while
Vinicius Lopes (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Osvaldo Carvalho) added 16 more.
Ben Palma (Dayton, Ohio/Wayne H.S.) hit .409 with 13 kills and
Tomas Olak (Rowville, Australia/Mazenod College) swung at a .389 clip with 11 kills.
Joey Bianco (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder H.S.) ran the offense with 56 assists while
Brayden Moyars (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) picked up a match-high 14 digs. Palma and Olak were each in on four blocks.
Ishmail Bangura led Goshen (7-11, 1-8 WHAC) with 18 kills while Pablo Sanchez had a team-high 11 digs.
Lourdes (8-7, 8-1) remains home on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host 15
th-ranked Indiana Tech in a battle for first place in the WHAC standings. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
