Christian Mays' (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth of game two helped Lourdes earn a split with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference preseason favorite Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday at Mercy Field. The Cardinals took the opener 11-6 before the Gray Wolves rebounded for the 7-6 victory in game two.
In the nightcap, Lourdes jumped in front early with four runs in the opening inning, three of which were unearned.
Caleb Edwards-Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) legged out a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to plate the game's first run before a throwing error made it 2-0 Gray Wolves.
Gray Harmer (Delta, B.C./St. Thomas More College) singled home two more as Lourdes batted around in the first.
Concordia (11-6, 2-1 WHAC) plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before scoring four times in the sixth, all with two outs, to take a 6-4 lead. The Gray Wolves would respond in the bottom of the frame as
Nick Zito (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Sports Leadership and Management Academy) scored on a wild pitch before
Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) delivered a RBI single to tie the game at six.
The game would remain deadlocked until the ninth with
Jase Kennedy (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) was hit to lead off the inning and Harmer laid down a sacrifice bunt. Mays then singled to right-center to walk the game off.
Riley McKinnon (Burlington, Ont./Assumption H.S.) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win for the Gray Wolves in relief.
In the opener,
Cord Noble (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) had a two-run single in the opening sinning to put Lourdes in front. After the Cardinals tied the game with a run in both the second and third, the Gray Wolves plated three in the bottom of the third. A dropped fly ball gave Lourdes the lead before Noble doubled in his third and fourth runs of the game.
Concordia pulled within in a run in the fifth on a two-run homer before Mays increased the Gray Wolf advantage to 6-4 with a RBI hit in the bottom of the inning.
The Cardinals tied the game with two in the sixth before sending 10 batters to the plate while scoring five times in the seventh to rally for the win.
Lourdes (4-10, 3-1) will remain home on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Point Park. First pitch in game one of the non-conference doubleheader is set for noon at Mercy Field.
