Lourdes extended its lead to three games in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings after sweeping Cornerstone 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"For us to beat a team playing as well as Cornerstone is huge," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We were able to play within our system and our serve and pass was good.
The 13
th-ranked Gray Wolves hit .373 for the match with
Joey Bianco (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder H.S.) handing out 27 assists while conducting the offense.
Vinicius Lopes (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Osvaldo Carvalho) put down a team-high 12 kills while
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) added eight more.
Reshawn Allen (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego H.S.) and
Tomas Olak (Rowville, Australia/Mazenod College) each hit .500 with six kills.
Cornerstone hit .517 in the opening stanza, but Lourdes matched it with 17 kills swinging at a .452 clip. The Gray Wolves took advantage of six service errors by the Golden Eagles and used a 10-4 run midway through the set to take the lead.
In a set with 11 ties, Cornerstone held a 16-15 lead midway through the second when Lourdes scored the next four points to forge in front on the way to building a 2-0 lead in the match. Three service aces, including two by
Brayden Moyars (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) led the way while the Golden Eagles committed six more service miscues.
Lourdes never trailed in the third, racing out to a 15-7 advantage on the way to the sweep. The Gray Wolves limited Cornerstone to just .125 hitting in the set.
Moyars led Lourdes defensively with five digs while Allen and Olak were each in on three blocks.
Ernest Broaster led Cornerstone (15-3, 11-3 WHAC) with 15 kills and hit .407 while Kyi Jagorin picked up 11 digs.
Lourdes (14-7, 14-0) remains home on Friday evening as the Gray Wolves entertain Lawrence Tech. The opening serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
