Gray Wolves Set to Host WHAC Tournament This Weekend

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball:  Postseason play has arrived for Lourdes men's volleyball with the Gray Wolves hosting the semifinals and championship of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament this weekend.  The 13th-ranked Gray Wolves are the tournament's top seed and battle fifth-seeded Lawrence Tech on Friday night.  With a win, Lourdes would face either 15th-ranked Cornerstone on Indiana Tech in Saturday night's title bout.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 13th season both on the Lourdes bench, and overall coaching men's volleyball, Greg Reitz has a 242-96 (.716) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves.  He has earned six conference Coach of the Year honors during his first 12 seasons at Lourdes, including the WHAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019.  He is the only head coach in program history.

Series Notes: Lourdes is 17-2 all-time against Lawrence Tech dating back to Jan. 20, 2016.  The Blue Devils won the first meeting this season on the court in five sets, but later forfeited the first contest in Southfield, Mich. on Feb. 16.  Lawrence Tech then won the second match inside the Ebeid Rec Center in four sets on April 5.  Lourdes is 7-1 against the Blue Devils inside the Ebeid Rec Center.  Lourdes is 9-0 against Cornerstone in a series that began Jan. 29, 2021.  The Gray Wolves downed the Golden Eagles in five sets in Grand Rapids, Mich. on March 2 before posting a straight sets sweep in the Ebeid Rec Center on March 30.  Lourdes is 4-0 against Cornerstone all-time at home.  Indiana Tech holds a 5-4 series edge against Lourdes dating back to Jan. 25, 2020.  The Gray Wolves won the first meeting inside the Ebeid Rec Center in four sets on March 19 before the Warriors posted a straight sets win in Fort Wayne, Ind. last Saturday to close out the regular season.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes swept Bethel (Ind.) 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 on Tuesday night behind 11 kills from Eduardo Ayala and Vinicius Lopes.  The Gray Wolves fell 25-15, 25-22, 25-14 to seventh-ranked Saint Xavier on Friday despite 11 kills from Ayala.  Lourdes wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 setback to Indiana Tech as Jaber Badarne had 10 kills.

Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene 25-14, 23-25, 25-12, 17-25, 15-12 on Tuesday in the WHAC quarterfinals for their eighth consecutive victory.  Brendon Down led Lawrence Tech with 330 kills and 46 service aces while Mario Cid is hitting .328.  Nathaniel Brownlee has handed out 937 assists.  Defensively, Matheus Andrade has picked up 206 digs while Akram Askoul has 70 total blocks, including 23 solo rejections.

Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles enter the semifinals having won three straight matches after downing Mount Vernon Nazarene 25-13, 25-20, 25-20 last Saturday in the regular season finale.  Ernest Broaster leads Cornerstone with 360 kills while hitting .359 this season.  Patrick Voloch has handed out 905 assists while Broaster and Patrick Voloch each have 40 service aces.  Defensively, Kyi Jagorin has picked up 225 digs while Joshua Beaumont has a team-high 79 blocks.

Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors posted a 25-20, 25-11, 27-25 victory at home against Siena Heights in the WHAC quarterfinals on Tuesday evening for the team's fourth straight win.  Daynte Stewart leads the Warriors with 323 kills and is hitting .295 this season.  Brandon Jones has handed out a team-best 479 assists while Clayton Wheatley has a team-high 30 aces.  Defensively, Alex Rosenow has 193 digs while Raekwon Rogers has 105 blocks, including 26 of the solo variety.

Third WHAC Title: Lourdes captured its third WHAC regular season crown this season, posting a 16-2 league mark.  The Gray Wolves also won regular season titles in 2019 and 2021, also winning the tournament title in those seasons.

Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: Lourdes is 5-2 all-time in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.  The Gray Wolves captured the tournament title in both 2019 and 2021.  Last season, Lourdes fell in four sets to Indiana Tech in the championship match after downing Cornerstone in four sets in the semifinals.  The 2020 tournament was not played due to COVID-19.

Award Winners: Eduardo Ayala was named the WHAC Player of the Year for the second straight season and joined Joey Bianco on the All-WHAC First Team.  Reshawn Allen, Vinicius Lopes, and Brayden Moyars were all Second Team All-WHAC honorees with Moyars also being named to the WHAC All-Freshman Team.

Surpassing 1,000 Kills:  Eduardo Ayala became just the fourth Gray Wolf in program history to reach 1,000 kills for his career against Siena Heights on April 6.  The senior now has 1,036 over his three seasons at Lourdes, and has moved past Frank Craig (2012-2015) for third on the all-time list. He is 143 kills shy of Evan Gebert (2017-2020) for second all-time.

Record Win Streak: Lourdes matched its program record with 12 straight victories from Feb. 13 through March 23 before having the streak snapped with a home loss to Saint Xavier.  The streak matched the record which was previously set from March 4 through April 20 of 2016.

This and That: Lourdes has posted winning records in all 13 seasons in program history, recording at least 15 victories per year ... the Gray Wolves were awarded a forfeit victory against Lawrence Tech on Feb. 16 for the Blue Devils' use of an ineligible player ... not one Gray Wolf have appeared in all 93 sets this season, with Brayden Moyars leading the way having played in 90.
