Lourdes closed out the home portion of its 2024 schedule on Sunday afternoon, celebrating Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence Tech 7-6 and 3-2 at Mercy Field.
The Gray Wolves started fast, starting the opening inning with four straight hits, including back-to-back RBI singles by
Caleb Edwards-Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee H.S.) and
Joel Suraganan (Pickerington, Ont./Dunbarton H.S.). A wild pitch then plated Edwards-Dugan to give Lourdes a 3-0 lead.
Suraganan's second hit of the game came in the fourth inning, an RBI single to increase the lead while
Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 Gray Wolves.
Andrew Arntson (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give Lourdes a 7-0 advantage.
Lawrence Tech would break through on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth before adding five in the sixth before
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) worked out of a bases loaded jam on his way to the win (2-5). Smith struck out nine over six innings of work, allowing nine hits and six runs while walking three.
Avery Harper (Cardington, Ohio/Cardington-Lincoln H.S.) came on to toss a perfect seventh to earn the save.
Alex Dupree (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) had a three-hit game while Edwards-Dugan also had two hits as part of a 10-hit attack.
In game two, Lawrence Tech (24-16, 16-9 WHAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth before the Gray Wolves answered immediately. A DiGennaro single plated Suraganan before
Caelan Cunningham (Port Dover, Ont./Holy Trinity Catholic H.S.) tied the game at two with his two-out base hit.
DiGennaro provided what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth with a home run to right, his fifth of the season.
Austin Ford (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) started and tossed three scoreless innings on the hill before
Bryn Biemiller (Newmarket, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary H.S.) came on in the fourth. Biemiller went the rest of the way, striking out three in six innings of work, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks to pick up the win (1-3).
Lourdes (11-29, 10-18) will begin its final WHAC series of the season next Saturday as the Gray Wolves travel to Howell, Mich. to battle Michigan-Dearborn. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lake Trust Stadium on the campus of Cleary University.
