Bats Come Alive in Sweep of Michigan-Dearborn

Lourdes began its final series of the season on Saturday afternoon, sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from the University of Michigan-Dearborn 13-10 and 16-5 at Lake Trust Stadium in Howell, Mich.

In the opener, all nine starters had at least one hit as the Gray Wolves banged out 14 in all.  Lourdes fell behind early, but responded each time.  After the Wolverines plated three in the bottom of the first, the Gray Wolves answered with three in the top of the second. Michigan-Dearborn did the same in the bottom of the frame, only to see Lourdes tie the game at six with three more runs in the top of the third on a home run by Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola H.S.).

An Alex Dupree (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) in the fourth put Lourdes in front by a run, only to see the Wolverines answer this time with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.  DiGennaro's second home run of the game, a solo shot in the fifth, put the Gray Wolves in front for good.  Christian Mays (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) also hit a two-run blast in the inning as part of a five-run fame to give Lourdes a 12-7 advantage.

Michigan-Dearborn pulled within two, 12-10, after six, but one final insurance run in the seventh secured the win.

Brendan Holland (Riga, Mich./Bissfield H.S.) started and worked five innings on the hill to earn the game one win.

Lourdes started fast in game two, plating five runs in the opening inning.  A balk put the Gray Wolves in front before Joel Suraganan's (Pickerington, Ont./Dunbarton H.S.) triple made it a 2-0 lead.  Suraganan would go 5-for-5 in the game with two doubles, two triples, and four runs batted in while scoring four times.  Skylar Mays (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) added a two-run single in the first after Gray Harmer (Delta, B.C./St. Thomas More Collegiate H.S.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After the Wolverines answered with one run in the bottom of the first, Suraganan drove home two with another triple in the second to start a four-run inning to extend the lead to 9-1.

Leading 9-3 in the sixth, DiGennero, who went 3-for-3 in the game, and Andrew Arntson (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) both had run-scoring hits.  Lourdes would score five more times in the seventh, two coming on an Arntson home run and another on a solo homer by Christian Mays as the Gray Wolves were on their way to the run-rule victory.

Caleb Loboschefski (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.) worked 6.2 innings for the win, striking out eight.

Lourdes (13-29, 12-18 WHAC) and Michigan-Dearborn (4-38, 2-28) will close out the regular season on Sunday with another doubleheader.  This twinbill will take place at Macomb Baseball Field in Warren, Mich. starting at 1 p.m.
