Rookie Jack Pelton Nets Game-Winning Goal in 1-0 WHAC Opener Against Rochester Christian

The win marks the second consecutive for the Gray Wolves this season

SYLVANIA, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) – Jack Pelton, a first-year student-athlete, netted the winning goal to propel the Lourdes University men's soccer team to a 1-0 triumph against Rochester Christian University in their conference debut Wednesday night at home.

"We tell the guys often that every conference win is a good win and they are never easy - tonight was a great example of that," said sixth-year head coach Matt Johnson. "We're happy to walk away with the win, but we certainly feel like we could have done a much better job of putting the game away sooner, when we had chances, and also disappointed with our response giving up the penalty right away after we scored. Nonetheless, big credits to [Alex Brock] for coming up with a tremendous save - he has a pretty good knack for saving them and that was big," he continued.

Pelton, who came off the bench and charted his first career goal, scored three minutes into the second half with help from junior Breno Quieroz to put Lourdes at a 1-0 advantage, which was quickly tested with a drawn penalty kick by the visiting Warriors less than 15 seconds later. The free kick was saved by senior keeper Alex Brock to remain in the lead and ultimately take the win.

"The goal was to start out the WHAC season with a win and we accomplished that, so we will take the 1-0 record and start preparing for Cleary on Saturday," coach finished.

Individually, Brock played all 90 minutes in goal, facing four shots on frame and saving all for a clean sheet win.

Match Notes:

  • The conference-opening victory marked the fifth consecutive in program history, and the seventh all-time.
  • The men's team has won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
  • The Gray Wolves earned their second win of the season, and the first at home.
  • Pelton earned his first collegiate goal in the match, also recording a career-high 40 minutes of playing time.
  • Quieroz, who helped on the goal, has earned a point or more in consecutive matches after scoring in the 2-0 win at Grace College.
