LANSING, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University men's basketball team held off a second-half surge from Cleary University to secure a 70-67 victory in a makeup game from the original Jan. 8 matchup. The win improves the Gray Wolves to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
Shaunn Monroe led the way with 15 points, playing all 40 minutes in the game. He was backed by Derek Fairley, who scored 18 points, including five three-pointers, to fuel the offense. Ross Thompson made a significant impact on both ends of the floor, contributing 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Lourdes held a comfortable 41-31 lead at halftime, shooting 61.5% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc. However, Cleary mounted a strong comeback in the second half, outscoring Lourdes 36-29. The Gray Wolves' offense cooled off after the break, shooting just 39.3% from the floor and 25% from three-point range, but they held on for the win.
Fairley's shooting from deep kept Cleary at bay, while Lourdes' defense limited Cleary to just 50% from the floor and 41.7% from three. Adonus Abrams added 9 points off the bench, while Thompson's double-digit rebound performance helped Lourdes control the glass, finishing with 30 rebounds compared to Cleary's 21.
