SYLVANIA, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) -- Lourdes University's men's basketball team earned a gritty 79-69 win over Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves improved to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in WHAC play.Â
Lourdes established a 38-32 lead at halftime, leaning on a strong offensive showing from Shaunn Monroe and Devyn Jones, who combined for 22 points in the opening frame. The Gray Wolves pushed their lead to as many as 13 late in the second half, thanks to efficient shooting and timely defensive stops. Cornerstone attempted to rally but was unable to overcome Lourdes' balanced attack and steady free-throw shooting down the stretch.
Monroe led the way for Lourdes with 28 points, connecting on 11-of-18 shots from the field while adding seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jones continued his impressive play with a double-double, tallying 20 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-13 shooting. Derek Fairley came off the bench to contribute 12 points, hitting key shots in the second half to keep Cornerstone at bay.
The Gray Wolves shot 49.2% from the floor and 68% from the free-throw line while limiting Cornerstone to just 43.8% shooting overall. Lourdes dominated the paint with 34 points inside and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points. The defense also played a critical role, holding the Golden Eagles to 5-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc and forcing seven turnovers.
Monroe's standout performance marked another high point in his strong season, as he has now averaged 24.3 points over his last three games, including a career-high 40 points against Lambton earlier in the week.
