Gray Wolves Fall 1-0 Despite Dominant Effort Against Cornerstone

Lourdes fires 26 shots but can’t convert in narrow WHAC setback

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Lourdes University men's soccer controlled much of the play Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium, but despite a 26-11 shot advantage, the Gray Wolves came up short in a 1-0 loss to Cornerstone in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.

The Gray Wolves (8-7, 4-4 WHAC) produced eight corner kicks and nine shots on goal, applying constant pressure throughout both halves. Still, it was the visiting Golden Eagles who broke through in the 68th minute, when Isaac Wood scored unassisted for the lone goal of the match.

Lourdes generated numerous scoring chances but was repeatedly denied by Cornerstone goalkeeper Roberto Gutierrez, who made eight saves to preserve the clean sheet. Jannik Hofmann (Bremen, Germany) led the Gray Wolves with six shots, including three on goal, while Breno Queiroz (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Tyson Woodring (Toledo, Ohio) each added three shots on frame.

Goalkeeper Yianni Kanellopoulos (Northville, Mich.) made five saves for Lourdes, including four in the first half to keep the match level through the opening 45 minutes.

The loss snapped Lourdes' three-match WHAC winning streak, as the Gray Wolves fell to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in league play. Cornerstone improved to 6-7 (4-4 WHAC) with the win.

Lourdes will return to Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 22, to host Madonna University at 6 p.m. in another WHAC matchup.
