LIVONIA, Mich. — A cold shooting night and a significant rebounding deficit proved too much to overcome Wednesday as Lourdes University fell 85–62 to Madonna University in the WHAC opener inside the Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
The Gray Wolves (4–1, 0–1 WHAC) shot just 33.9% from the field and 20% from three, while the Crusaders countered with 51.6% shooting and a 45–23 rebounding advantage. Madonna turned 11 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points, creating a margin Lourdes was unable to close.
Sophomore guard
Derek Fairley (Cleveland, Ohio) led Lourdes with 19 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Senior
Dasan Doucet (Kettering, Ohio) added 14 points, knocking down two triples and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.
Freshman
Jayden Jones (Toledo, Ohio) provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, including a pair of threes, while
Charlie Wood (Swanton, Ohio) added 10 points and four rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting.
Lourdes trailed 46–30 at halftime and cut the deficit to 13 early in the second half after back-to-back buckets from Fairley, but Madonna responded with a 12–2 run to pull away for good.
Madonna (4–2, 1–0 WHAC) was led by Ahmoni Weston's 22 points and seven rebounds, while Joey Liedel scored 17 and Makyle Doss added 16.
Lourdes will look to rebound on Saturday, Nov. 22, when the Gray Wolves return home to host Cornerstone University at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
