GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —
Derek Fairley's explosive season debut powered Lourdes University men's basketball to an 85-80 victory over Saint Xavier (Ill.) Friday night in the 2025-26 season opener.
Fairley, a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio, scored 34 points on 11-of-24 shooting while knocking down four three-pointers and converting 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He also added eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a commanding all-around performance.
The Gray Wolves (1-0) built an early 12-point lead in the first half behind Fairley's hot start and timely buckets from
Joe Francis, who finished with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Lourdes led 36-30 at the break after holding the Cougars (1-2) to just 35% from the floor in the opening period.
Saint Xavier clawed back in the second half behind Davion Lawrence's 20 points and Mekhi Wilson's four triples, eventually pulling even at 71-71 with just over three minutes remaining. Lourdes responded immediately with a three from
Dasan Doucet and key defensive stops down the stretch.
Freshman
J'Siah Jefferson added 12 points and three assists, while Doucet contributed 10 points and four rebounds.
Charlie Wood provided an interior presence with five rebounds and three blocks.
Lourdes shot an efficient 48.4% from the field, including 60% from three-point range in the second half, while converting 16-of-23 free throws.
The Gray Wolves return to action Saturday at noon, facing Wright State-Lake at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center to conclude the Grand Rapids Classic.
