GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Lourdes women's basketball (10-2) (6-1 in WHAC) nearly knocked off No.25 Georgetown College (15-1) (0-0 in RSC) on the road on Monday afternoon, losing 64-71 in a competitive out of conference matchup.
The Gray Wolves received votes in the Dec. 17 weekly edition of the NAIA women's basketball national poll and came into the game looking to potentially jump the No. 25 Tigers in the rankings. Lourdes fought to the end but weren't able to overcome Georgetown's stifling fourth-quarter defense.
Senior guard
Emma Pedroza led the team on the glass with 13 rebounds, marking her second straight double-digit rebound game. Pedroza's 13 points in the contest also marks her second consecutive game with at least a double-double after her triple-double last game against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
Senior forward
Tamyah Worthy was back in the starting lineup and picked up right where she left off, nearly contributing a double-double as well with 13 points and nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Junior guard
Kaylona Butler was once again the team's leading scorer, dropping 19 points and draining three of the team's five three-pointers in the game.
Lourdes jumped out to a five-point lead after the first quarter and were only down 35-36 at the half. However, six Gray Wolves' turnovers in the third quarter helped give the Tigers a slim five-point cushion heading into the fourth. A defensive battle in the fourth quarter limited both teams to under 30% shooting and helped Georgetown hold on to the narrow seven-point victory.
Both squads were very evenly matched throughout the entirety of the game. Offensively, Lourdes held the advantage over Georgetown in field goal percentage (39.7% to 33.8%), three-point percentage (27.8% to 16.7%) and free-throw percentage (83.3% to 73.3%). Defensively, Georgetown held the advantage over Lourdes in rebounds (50 to 48), steals (10 to 5), blocks (2 to 0), and turnovers forced (15 to 7). Georgetown also held a significant advantage in bench points, 20 to 2.
Coach Bradford's Postgame Comments
"I'm really proud of the way this team competes and plays to win. To play toe-to-toe with them at their place shows how we play when we're at our best and how willing we are to play with each other. I thought we did a great job defensively today. Georgetown is an athletic and fast team, so you have to play every possession near perfectly to keep them from getting shots up. I think we stayed composed and managed to communicate with each other and adjust on another level today. I thought we represented the WHAC well.
Next Game
Lourdes will continue their Kentucky road trip tomorrow as they take on Brescia University at 5:00 p.m in Owensboro.
