SYLVANIA, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) – A clutch putback dunk from Derrell Jones in the final seconds helped the Lourdes University men's basketball team secure a hard-fought 64-62 victory over Cleary University on Wednesday evening inside the Russell J. Ebeid Rec Center. The win improves the Gray Wolves to 19-7 overall and 13-5 in WHAC play.
Lourdes controlled much of the first half, building a 30-24 lead at the break behind strong play in the paint and a decisive edge in second-chance points. Cleary responded in the second half, closing the gap with efficient shooting, but the Gray Wolves held their ground defensively down the stretch.
Jones led Lourdes with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Shaunn Monroe added 11 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Paxton Payne contributed 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting. Adonus Abrams anchored the defense with seven rebounds and a steal.
Cleary made a late push in the final minutes, cutting the deficit to a single possession. With the game on the line, Jones crashed the glass for an offensive rebound and threw down the game-winning dunk to seal the victory.
