INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision to Marian University (IN) on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis, moving to 0-11 on the season. Marian capitalized early, with a three-run first inning that set the tone for the contest.
The Gray Wolves took a brief lead in the top of the first when Andrew Arntson doubled down the left-field line, scoring Alex Dupree, who reached on an error. However, Marian responded quickly, tying the game in the bottom of the first before adding two more runs for a 3-1 lead.
Marian continued to build on their advantage, tacking on one run in the third, three in the fourth, and a single run in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-1. Lourdes' offense showed signs of life in the seventh and eighth innings, as Caleb Edwards-Dugan tripled in Nick DiGennaro for a run, and Landon Brown launched a solo homer to right field. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, and Marian added an insurance run in the eighth for the final score of 9-3.
Zane Mullins (0-1) took the loss for Lourdes, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits over three innings of work. Marian's starter, Sean Risley (1-0), earned the win, giving up one run on one hit in two innings.
At the plate for Lourdes, Arntson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Brown's solo home run in the eighth was the first of his rookie season. Edwards-Dugan also added a triple in the seventh.
