TOLEDO, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University baseball team returned to Mercy Field for its home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, facing off against Mount Vernon Nazarene University in non-conference action. The Gray Wolves fell in game one, 15-6, before dropping the second, 8-1.Â
Game One: Mount Vernon Nazarene 15, Lourdes 6
Mount Vernon Nazarene (18-7) used a seven-run first inning to set the tone, pulling away for a 15-6 victory over Lourdes (0-11) in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Mercy Field.
The Gray Wolves responded with a run in the bottom of the first, as Landon Brown drew a bases-loaded walk.
Lourdes climbed back into the game with a four-run third inning, highlighted by Joel Suraganan's RBI double and Grant Craig's two-run single. However, Mount Vernon Nazarene regained control with a two-run fourth and a five-run sixth, capped by a three-run homer.
The Gray Wolves added their final run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Nick Digennaro, but the Cougars' offense proved too much.
Joel Suraganan and A.J. Brinson led Lourdes with two hits each, while Grant Craig drove in two runs.
Landen Vance (0-1) took the loss for Lourdes after being unable to record an out in the first inning. Ryan Butler provided two scoreless innings in relief, while Kaeden Granger and Keegan McMahon each worked multiple frames.
G. Peters (1-0) earned the win for Mount Vernon Nazarene, tossing 4.2 innings in relief with seven strikeouts.
Game Two: Mount Vernon Nazarene 8, Lourdes 1
The Cougars (18-7) carried their momentum into game two, using a five-run fifth inning to take control. Lourdes (0-12) managed a run in the sixth when Zane Mullins lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Landon Brown, but the Gray Wolves were otherwise kept off the scoreboard.
Lourdes tallied eight hits in the contest, with Caleb Edwards-Dugan and Joel Suraganan each collecting two. Nick Digennaro continued his strong day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
Austin Nuhfer started on the mound for Lourdes and worked a scoreless first inning. Ayden Hall (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in three innings, while Nathan Frontine finished the game with two scoreless innings of relief.
Mount Vernon Nazarene's A. Gonzalez (2-0) tossed four shutout innings for the win, while C. Conn recorded the final nine outs to close out the game.
