TOLEDO, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University baseball team hosted Lawrence Tech University in a Saturday home doubleheader at Mercy Field, dropping both ends of a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader to the visiting Blue Devils. The Gray Wolves fell 8-5 in the opener before coming up short in game two, 12-6, in a key matchup with conference standings implications. Both teams entered the series with 11 league wins, but the Blue Devils used timely hitting to pull away in both contests and improving to 13 WHAC wins.
Game One: Lourdes 5, Lawrence Tech 8
Despite a late push, Lourdes was unable to overcome an early deficit on Saturday afternoon, falling 8-5 to Lawrence Tech in the opener.
The Blue Devils racked up 17 hits and scored in each of the middle three innings to build an 8-2 lead before the Gray Wolves chipped away.
A.J. Brinson launched a two-run homer in the fourth, and
Jase Kennedy added an RBI double in the fifth to bring Lourdes within three, but the Gray Wolves were held scoreless over the final two frames.
Caleb Edwards-Dugan finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Brinson went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Landen Vance took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on 12 hits over 3.2 innings.
Game Two: Lourdes 6, Lawrence Tech 12
Lourdes battled back late but couldn't overcome a big offensive day from Lawrence Tech, falling 12-6 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Mercy Field.
The Blue Devils racked up 20 hits and scored in six different innings, including a four-run sixth and a three-run seventh that put the game out of reach. Lourdes, meanwhile, was held scoreless through the first four innings before pushing across two in the fifth and four more in the eighth.
Caleb Loboschefski (3-5) took the loss for the Gray Wolves, allowing six runs on 14 hits over six innings. Offensively, Lourdes was paced by A.J. Brinson, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI double, and Nick DiGennaro, who delivered a two-run double during the four-run eighth. Joel Suraganan added two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Lawrence Tech opened the scoring in the second inning and gradually built a 10-2 lead through seven innings. Lourdes made things interesting with its eighth-inning rally, which included RBIs from Andrew Arntson, Caleb Edwards-Dugan, and DiGennaro. However, a two-run homer in the ninth sealed the win for the visitors.
