SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lourdes baseball team (12-23, 6-12 in WHAC) split their road Friday doubleheader with Lawrence Tech (14-18, 7-9 in WHAC), remaining in 11
th place in the WHAC.
The Gray Wolves shut out the Blue Devils 3-0 in game one but got shutout themselves 0-4 in game two. Lawrence Tech is currently in 7
th place in the conference, two games up on Lourdes.
Game #1: W, 3-0
The Gray Wolves' ace,
Brenden Holland, threw his second complete game shutout of the last few weeks in game one against Lawrence Tech. Holland gave up seven hits and struck out seven Blue Devils' batters. Holland's E.R.A is now at a team-best, 3.66. His overall record improves to 5-2.
Once again leading the Lourdes offense was sophomore centerfielder
Drake Sekinger. The leadoff hitter went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the seventh inning, a double, and two stolen bases.
Jase Kennedy also performed well, hitting an RBI double to score Sekinger in the third. The Gray Wolves' third run was scored on a
Landon Brown ground ball that was misplayed by the Lawrence Tech third baseman.
Game #2: L, 0-4
Game two was the opposite of game one with Lourdes' offense going silent against Lawrence Tech's pitcher, Kenny Wright.
Jace Bloomer, Andrew Arnston, and
Brad Hughes accounted for the only hits for Lourdes in the game.
Kenny Wright got the win for the Blue Devils with seven innings pitched and five strikeouts. Donovan Sayyae and Nick McCormick closed the game out for Lawrence Tech with two base runners allowed over the last two innings.
On the mound for Lourdes was
Landen Vance. The senior from Metamora, Ohio threw a solid eight inning complete game, despite earning the loss. Vance's first two runs came in the first two innings off of a walk and a fielder's choice.
The game stayed at a 2-0 Lawrence Tech lead until the eighth inning when LTU's Justin Baird hit an RBI triple. Baird was later scored on an RBI ground out to make it 4-0 in favor of the Blue Devils.
The split decision makes it mathematically possible for Lourdes to get into the WHAC tournament, but likely limits their options to the No. 6, No. 7 or No. 8 seed with 10 games remaining.
