The Lourdes University Men's Basketball team had their home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter. The Gray Wolves would be victorious in their debut with a big 62-59 victory.
The first half was all Saints though as they jumped out early to an eight point lead that would grow with tough defense. The Lourdes offense struggled shooting and rebounding down low throughout the first half. The Saints would hit a running three point shot by Chris Lemm at the buzzer to give the Saints a 34-23 advantage.
Elvin Butler would lead the team with five points at the break for the Gray Wolves while Lemm would lead the Saints with 11 points at the break.
The Gray Wolves battled, scratched and clawed their way back into the game in the second half tying the game up at 42 apiece at the 13:20 mark with a big three point field goal from the left corner by
Elvin Butler. The two teams would battle over the next four minutes with the Saints grabbing the lead by four points. The Wolves would fight back and tie it on two different occasions before
John Washington would give the Gray Wolves their first lead of the ballgame at the 7:01 mark 53-52.
The Gray Wolves lead would be short lived though as point guard Nick Kosovich would hit a deep three and a pair of free throws to give the lead back to the Saints at 57-53.
Senior
John Willhite would pull things even for the Gray Wolves with an acrobatic layup following a pair of free throws from Sophomore
Marcus Outlaw to even it up at 57-57 with 3:17min remaining.
Junior
Corey Harvey would make a short shot in the lane with 2:35 remaining to give the Gray Wolves their biggest lead of the game at two points following a charging call 59-57.
The biggest shot of the game would belong to Senior
John Washington as he held the ball with shot clock running down would step out and hit a three pointer to electrify the subdued crowd and give the Gray Wolves a five point lead with 1:24 remaining in regulation.
The defense would be tested in the end with nine seconds remaining the Saints would have possession of the ball down three. The Gray Wolves would be up to the challenge though as a deflected three point attempt at the end would secure the victory for Lourdes 62-59 to give the Gray Wolves their first WHAC victory of the season.
