Box Score
Lourdes women's basketball team had a chance to win or tie in the closing seconds on Tuesday evening, but could not find the bottom of the basket as the Gray Wolves suffered a 58-56 setback to Michigan-Dearborn at the UMD Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.
Ty Ali (Chicago, Ill./Rich South H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves with 15 points, but was Lourdes only player to tally double figures.
“Ty had a nice game scoring, but when your point guard leads the way for you it's going to be tough to win,” head coach
Zareth Gray said after the game. “That said, we had a chance to win at the end.”
Lourdes could not overcome 37 turnovers though, which led to 23 Michigan-Dearborn points.
The Gray Wolves led by six at halftime, 32-26, shooting 54.5% from the floor. Five points by Ali helped spearhead an early 8-0 run which gave Lourdes an early 14-6 advantage less than nine minutes into the contest. The lead stayed between four and eight the remainder of the half, with the Gray Wolves taking the six-point lead into the break.
A 7-1 run by the Wolves out of the locker room tied the game at 33 before Lourdes answered with a 7-1 spurt of its own to rebuild the six-point lead, 42-36. Eight straight points by the hosts though gave Michigan-Dearborn its first lead of the second half, 44-42, with 10 minutes to play. Again the Gray Wolves answered, retaking the lead and holding the advantage into the final six minutes of play.
Michigan-Dearborn went on a 7-1 run to take the lead for good, 55-51, with 4:34 to play. Lourdes cut the deficit to one, 57-56 on a
Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) jumper with 17 seconds to play, but could not tie the game down the stretch.
Lourdes shot just 29.6% from the floor in the second half and 55.4% from the free throw for the night in addition to the turnovers.
“Shooting 55% from the line and committing 37 turnovers is a recipe to lose a game,” Gray added. “I didn't think we had the energy we needed tonight. We missed layups and free throws, which has been our key to winning contests thus far.”
Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) finished one point shy of her second consecutive double-double, scoring nine points and adding 10 rebounds.
Andrea Collins led Michigan-Dearborn (1-3, 1-1 WHAC) with 11 points while Jalissa Williams added 10 points for the Wolves.
Lourdes outrebounded the Wolves 50-35 for the night.
Lourdes (2-3, 1-1) will return to action on Friday evening for the first day of the Marian Tournament, held in Indianapolis, Ind. The Gray Wolves will face Goshen beginning at 7 p.m.
