Returning home to Tam-o-Shanter for the first time in a month, Lourdes University struggled shooting the basketball on Wednesday evening, falling 72-45 to Madonna.
The Gray Wolves shot just 18.3% from the field, including just 2-of-31 from three-point range (6.5%), and committed 22 turnovers in the loss to the Crusaders.
“I was disappointed in our effort tonight all-around,” head coach
Zareth Gray said after the game. “We didn't play like we did last weekend in Indianapolis. We didn't have the energy needed to compete today.”
A 13-2 run by Madonna midway through the first half broke the game open, giving the visitors a 17-6 lead with 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Another 14-3 run late in the stanza helped to put the Crusaders on top 38-16 at intermission.
Lourdes connected on just 5-of-31 (16.1%) of its shots before halftime, failing to make a triple in 12 tries.
A 14-0 run by Madonna over the first five minutes of the second half after the Gray Wolves scored the opening basket of the half pushed the lead to 34. Lourdes went on a late run, a 9-1 spurt, to pull within 66-43 with two minutes to play, but would not get any closer.
Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) led Lourdes with 12 points and seven rebounds while
Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) pulled down 12 boards, including seven on the offensive end.
Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) chipped in seven points and seven rebounds as Lourdes outrebounded Madonna 54-41, grabbing 30 offensive caroms which led to 22 second chance points.
Shantelle Herring led Madonna (4-2, 2-1 WHAC) with 16 points while Chelsea Williams added 12 and Rachel Melcher had 10 points off of the bench.
Lourdes (3-5, 1-2) will return to action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on #6 Davenport. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
