Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but it was not enough for Lourdes on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves fell on the road to Spring Arbor 70-56 at the SAU Fieldhouse in Spring Arbor, Mich.
Hampton scored 16 of her points and had seven boards after intermission, but the Gray Wolves were not able to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit.
“Tarynn played well for us tonight,” head coach
Zareth Gray said after the game. “She got to the rim and grabbed some critical rebounds for us. She did a solid job of getting to the free throw line as well.”
The Gray Wolves had an early 14-12 lead and had the game tied at 16 with 11:42 to play in the opening stanza before the Cougars went on a large run. One field goal by the Gray Wolves the rest of the half allowed Spring Arbor to finish the stanza on a 16-4 run to build the 12-point advantage.
The lead grew to 18 right out of the locker room before a
Ty Ali (Chicago, Ill./Rich South H.S.) jumper ended the scoring drought. Six straight points pulled Lourdes to within 12, 40-28, at the 13:30 mark, and the Gray Wolves would eventually pull within 10 with just over six minutes remaining.
Lourdes could not cut the deficit into single digits though, and Spring Arbor made seven straight free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
“We gave better effort tonight and fought hard to try to get the deficit under 10,” Gray added. “Unfortunately we had to foul late in the game for the final outcome. We struggled from the free throw line and cost ourselves lots of points there as well.”
The Gray Wolves were just 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the charity stripe on the evening, making just 11-of-20 (55%) in the second half. Hampton went 8-for-11 from the line though as part of her solid effort on the night. Meanwhile the Cougars connected on 17-of-22 (77.3%) over the final 20 minutes.
Ali added eight points while
Jessica Durr (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton H.S.) pulled down eight boards for Lourdes. The Gray Wolves shot 33.3% from the floor for the game and were just 2-of-16 (12.5%) from three-point range.
Carlie Newman paced Spring Arbor (2-0) with 19 points and nine rebounds while Aimee Konkel scored 12 points and had five assists off of the bench.
Lourdes (1-2) will have 10 days off before returning to the hardwood in its conference opener on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Lawrence Tech. Tip-off in Southfield, Mich. is set for 1 p.m.
