Lourdes never led on Thursday evening, but was within four points with under four minutes to play before falling 57-50 to Marian in the opening round of the Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament played at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill.
 
The Gray Wolves fell behind 21-12 less than 13 minutes into the contest before battling back to close within four, 25-21 at the intermission.
 
A lay-up by Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.) to start the second half pulled Lourdes to within two, but a 6-0 run by the Knights midway through the half pushed the lead out to 10, 38-28, with 8:22 to play in the game.
 
Lourdes cut its deficit down to four with just under four minutes to play on a bucket by Alex Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.), but Marian answered with a 9-2 run of its own to put the game out of reach for the Gray Wolves.
 
Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led Lourdes with 11 points while Davis added 10 for the Gray Wolves.  Lourdes shot 41.3% from the floor for the game, but committed 21 turnovers which led to 19 Marian points.
 
Dwight Cliff led all scorers with 21 points for Marian (8-3), while Nick Achille added 14 more for the Knights.
 
Lourdes will now face conference foe Siena Heights on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. EST in the consolation round of the SXU Midwest Tournament.
