Cornerstone Tops Lourdes with Second Half Run

Lourdes trailed by just three at halftime, but Cornerstone went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to defeat the Gray Wolves 61-50 on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
 
With Lourdes leading 8-7 five minutes into the contest, Cornerstone went on a 9-0 run to take an eight-point advantage as the Gray Wolves were held scoreless for more than six-and-a-half minutes.  The Golden Eagles maintained a six-point advantage with five minutes to play before intermission before Lourdes went on a 6-0 run to tie the contest at 21 on another hoop by Butler.  Cornerstone drained a three in the final seconds though to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room.
 
The Gray Wolves trailed 30-26 four minutes into the second half before Cornerstone scored 10 straight points over the next two minutes to build a 14-point lead.  The Golden Eagles increased its edge to 17 with eight minutes to play before Lourdes went on another run.  Nine straight points, including five from Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.), pulled the Gray Wolves within 51-43, with just over five minutes to play.
 
Lourdes would not get any closer though, and saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as the Gray Wolves concluded the first half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.
 
The Gray Wolves shot 46.7% from the floor for the game, but committed 15 turnovers which led to 15 Golden Eagles points.  Alex Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) led Lourdes with 14 points and six rebounds while Harvey added 11 points and six boards.  Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) added 10 points while Dorel Sutherland (Toronto, Ont./Ascension H.S.) also scored a season-high 10 points for the Gray Wolves.
 
Wes Hudson led Cornerstone (13-6, 7-4 WHAC) with 14 points and seven assists while Shane Moreland added 12 points and Jake Plite chipped in 10 more.  The Golden Eagles shot 51.1% from the floor while committing just eight miscues.

"They are a good team that shoots the basketball well," head coach Andre Smith stated.  "We hung around in the first half, but in the second half we didn't make free throws and had poor execution."
 
Lourdes (12-6, 7-4) will open the second half of WHAC play on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
