Lourdes set a new school record, surrendering just 25 points on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves won for the sixth time in their last seven games, defeating Lawrence Tech 63-25 at Tam-o-Shanter.
“Any time you can win six of seven games in this conference it means you're making great strides,” head coach
Andre Smith stated after the game. “The WHAC is a tough conference and you're going to battle every night.”
The Gray Wolves previous record for fewest points allowed in a game was 31 set earlier this season in a victory at Michigan-Dearborn. Lourdes, the NAIA Division II national leader for fewest points allowed, has now held five opponents under 40 points this season.
“We strive on defense,” Smith added. “To get to where we want to be we have to put the effort in on the defensive end of the floor.”
The Gray Wolves wasted little time seizing control of the game, scoring the game's first 12 points in just over three minutes of action. Lawrence Tech cut the lead to single digits at 15-7 with 13:24 to play, but another 7-0 spurt pushed the lead to 15 and Lourdes would keep a double digit advantage the rest of the way.
Lourdes took a 36-15 lead into the locker room and allowed even fewer points over the final 20 minutes. The Gray Wolves held the Blue Devils to just 19% shooting from the floor in the second half and 23.7% for the game while forcing 22 total turnovers, 17 via steals.
The Gray Wolves kept Lawrence Tech off of the scoreboard for the first eight minutes of the second half, opening on a 16-0 run to build a 52-15 advantage and never looked back.
Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led Lourdes with 18 points, making 4-of-5 from three-point range while
Remy Fleurima (North Lauderdale, Fla./Coconut Creek H.S.) added a season-high 10 points. Lourdes outrebounded the Blue Devils 43-22 for the contest, and outscored the visitors 30-2 in the paint.
Jake Mullin led Lawrence Tech (2-18, 1-11 WHAC) with 12 points and six rebounds.
“Saturday becomes a big game for us,” Smith concluded. “We'll have the 11
th ranked team in the country in here. Those are the games you have to win to get to where you want to be.”
Lourdes (13-6, 8-4) will host #11 Davenport at Tam-o-Shanter on Saturday with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
