Trailing by six points at the break, Lourdes rallied, taking the lead for good midway through the second half on the way to a 58-53 victory over Aquinas on Tuesday evening at the Sturrus FCS in Grand Rapids, Mich.
With the victory, Lourdes has moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings along with Madonna and Indiana Tech.
“We made some good adjustments at halftime and buckled down defensively in the second half,” head coach
Andre Smith said after the game. “It's another big road win for us, and it came down to playing good defense yet again.”
Lourdes trailed 34-28 at halftime and fell behind by as many as nine two minutes into the second half before beginning its comeback. Six straight points, capped by a
Dorel Sutherland (Toronto, Ont./Ascension H.S.) jumper pulled the Gray Wolves to within 39-36 with 16 minutes to play.
An
Alex Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) jumper at the 10:21 mark made it a one-point game, 45-44, before the Saints pushed the lead back to five. A 12-0 run over six minutes, including a go-ahead jumper by
Ron Dukes (Saint Louis, Mo./North County Christian H.S.) allowed the Gray Wolves to seize control and build a 56-49 advantage with under two minutes to play in the game.
“We got some baskets on transition during the run which helped us,” Smith added.
The first half went back and forth for the first 11 minutes, with Lourdes holding a 17-14 edge before the Saints went on their big run. A 13-4 spurt over four minutes put the hosts on top by six, 27-21. The Gray Wolves cut their deficit to one only to see Aquinas score the final five points of the half.
Ken Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook H.S.) led the way for Lourdes off of the bench with 12 points while
Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.) added 11 points. Davis tallied 10 points giving the Gray Wolves three double-digit scorers. The Gray Wolves bench outscored Aquinas' 23-3.
Lourdes shot 61% from the field for the game and outrebounded the Saints 27-13. The Saints shot 51.3% from the field and made 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point range.
Brett Pfahler led Aquinas (10-14, 8-8 WHAC) with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Zach Eddy added 15 points.
Lourdes (16-7, 11-5 WHAC) will return home to Tam-o-Shanter on Thursday evening to host Concordia (Mich.). Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
