Lourdes Wins Fourth Straight Downing Concordia 71-61

Box Score
Lourdes picked up its fifth victory of the season when trailing at halftime with a 46-point outburst in the second half on Thursday evening as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 71-61 at Tam-o-Shanter.

Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.) scored a season-high 24 points, making 11-of-11 attempts from the free throw line, and Dorel Sutherland (Toronto, Ont./Ascension H.S.) added 14 more as the Gray Wolves won for the fourth straight time.

“This was a big win for us tonight after they won the first meeting at their place,” head coach Andre Smith said.  “It was a tough, fought game.  Corey did what senior captains should do and kept balls alive and was assertive in his attack tonight.  Dorel had a big game and our inside presence really helped us tonight.”

Trailing 30-25 at the break, Lourdes opened the second half with an 11-1 run over the first four minutes to take a five-point advantage.  Concordia fought back with a 6-0 run of its own, retaking the lead 42-40 with 12 minutes to play.

The game remained tight until an 11-4 run by the Gray Wolves over four minutes gave the hosts the lead for good, 57-50 with five minutes to play.  Concordia cut the lead to three with 2:32 to play, but that would be as close as the Cardinals would get the rest of the way.  Lourdes made 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:04 to secure the game.

Lourdes looked poised to take control of the game early, scoring the first seven points of the contest, but Concordia fought back with a 12-0 run of its own to build a lead it would maintain the rest of the first half.  The Cardinals lead grew to as many as nine, 20-11, with eight minutes to play before intermission before the Gray Wolves cut the lead down to three, 26-23, and eventually took a five-point deficit into the locker room.

As a team Lourdes went 27-of-33 (81.8%) from the free throw line on the evening and outrebounded the Cardinals 29-22.  Alex Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) added nine points and Remy Fleurima (North Lauderdale, Fla./Coconut Creek H.S.) added eight points, all from the free throw line.

“Thirty-three free throw attempts won us the game tonight,” Smith added.  “We haven't been getting to the line enough lately, but tonight we attacked the basket much better.”

Josh Fugate led Concordia (11-14, 9-8 WHAC) with 19 points, scoring 14 in the first half.  John Schaeffer added 13 more for the Cardinals, nine of which came after the break.

Lourdes (17-7, 12-5) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle Indiana Tech.  The Gray Wolves and Warriors are both tied with Madonna for second place in the WHAC.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
