Tarynn Hampton's (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) double-double led four Lourdes players in double figures on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves picked up a road Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory, defeating Marygrove 63-57 at Ford Fieldhouse in Highland Park, Mich.
Hampton tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds while
Ty Ali (Chicago, Ill./Rich South H.S.) and
Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) each added 12 points in the victory.
Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Sylvania Southview H.S.) added 10 points and a game-high seven assists while
Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) pulled down 11 rebounds.
"Tarynn had another double-double, but we got contributions from evryone today," head coach Zareth Gray stated after the game. "It was a total team effort."
Lourdes never trailed in the contest, scoring the first four points of the game and utilized a 12-2 run midway through the first half to build a 24-12 advantage. Marygrove answered with an 11-4 run to pull within five with just over three minutes to play before intermission, but the Gray Wolves scored the next seven points before taking a 35-25 advantage into the break.
A 10-0 run by the Gray Wolves capped with an
Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) triple put Lourdes on top 50-32 with 11:50 to play in the contest. The Mustangs again answered, scoring 10 straight points of their own to pull within a single digit deficit.
The Gray Wolves again pushed the lead back to 11, 57-46 with less than six minutes to play, but Marygrove made one last charge. A jumper in the lane by Candace Minus with 53 seconds remaining made it a three-point contest, 60-57, but Scott answered on the other end for Lourdes and the Gray Wolves held on for their fifth victory of the season, matching their win total from all of 2011-2012, the team's inaugural season.
"We started to play not to lose again down the stretch, but figured it out in time and were able to get the win," Gray added. "We made some big free throws down the stretch when we needed them."
Lourdes outrebounded Marygrove 46-35and finished with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, handing out 18 helpers while committing 17 miscues.
"We really came to play today and gave great team effort," Gray concluded. "When we do that we're able to get the win. We need to do this again on Wednesday night."
Ciara Moore led Marygrove (2-14, 0-9 WHAC) with 18 points while Keara Marks added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Lourdes (5-12, 2-7) will return home to Tam-o-Shanter on Wednesday evening to face Northwestern Ohio. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
