After trailing by one point at intermission, Lourdes outscored Goshen 40-18 over the final 20 minutes to earn a 71-50 victory over the Maple Leafs on Friday evening on day one of the Maple City Hoopfest held at Gunden Gymnasium in Goshen, Ind.
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) had his first collegiate double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, leading four Gray Wolves that scored in double figures. Eight of his 13 boards came on the offensive end.
A 9-0 run by Goshen midway through the first half allowed the Maple Leafs to build a 13-7 advantage. The hosts held the advantage until just under six minutes remaining in the first half when Lourdes scored six straight points to retake the lead. The lead changed hands seven times in the first half until Goshen went into the locker room with a 32-31 advantage.
"I think we had a real lack of mental focus in the first half," head coach
Andre Smith said after the game. "We struggled attacking their zone, didn't play smart, and missed four of nine free throws."
Seventeen straight points by the Gray Wolves as part of a 26-5 run in the second half broke the game open as Lourdes limited the Maple Leafs to just seven points over the game's final 14 minutes to earn its second victory to open the young season.
"Our posts became a lot more active in the second half," Smith stated. "We cut down on turnovers, committing just five as opposed to 11 in the first half. We also only had three assists at half but finished the game with 16 so we passed the ball much better."
Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) scored 13 points for the Gray Wolves while
Jerah'me Williams (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell H.S.) and
Jerome Talton (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw H.S.) added 11 points each. Lourdes shot 50% from the floor while holding the Maple Leafs to just 37.5% shooting.
Tre Boyd and Billy Geschke led Goshen (0-1) with 11 points each while Boyd also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Jerron Jamerson added 10 points for the Maple Leafs.
Lourdes (2-0) will return to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon for day two of the event. The Gray Wolves will face #9 Bethel (Ind.) beginning at 1 p.m. at Gunden Gymnasium.
