Men's Hoops Heads to Hillsdale for Exhibition, Hosts Lawrence Tech in Home Opener

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes wraps up its five-game season-opening road trip on Wednesday evening with an exhibition game at Hillsdale, a NCAA Division II school.  The Gray Wolves will then return home to Tam-o-Shanter on Saturday afternoon for the home opener, and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener, against Lawrence Tech.

Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 54-45 (.545) record.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.  Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.

Series Notes: Lourdes and Hillsdale have never met one another on the hardwood.  The Gray Wolves hold a 3-0 all-time series advantage against Lawrence Tech after sweeping all three contests last year.  Lourdes won the first meeting between the two schools 63-52 on Nov. 2, 2012 at the season-opening Trent Allen Memorial Tip-off before downing the Blue Devils 53-47 in Southfield, Mich. in the WHAC opener for both schools on Nov. 17, 2012.  The Gray Wolves then notched a 63-25 victory over Lawrence Tech on Jan. 16, 2013 at Tam-o-Shanter in the final meeting of the year.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves led wire-to-wire last Wednesday afternoon on the way to a 65-54 victory at Point Park.  Lourdes led by as many as 19 points in the second half.  Eric Worthey and Elvin Butler led the Gray Wolves with 13 points each while Zach Steinmetz added 10 points.  Lourdes shot 48.9% from the floor and made a season-high six three-point field goals.

Scouting Hillsdale: The Chargers will be playing their regular season opener on Wednesday against Lourdes while the contest will count as an exhibition for the Gray Wolves.  Hillsdale dropped all three exhibition games they played, losing at Valparaiso, Toledo (in overtime), and Indiana.  Hillsdale is picked to finish second in the GLIAC South.  Tim Dezelski, the team's leading scorer from one year ago returns after averaging 16.0 points per game while Brandon Pritzl added 11.3 points per night.

Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have won two straight games entering the week following a 79-64 triumph over Mount Vernon Nazarene last Tuesday.  Lawrence Tech hosts Kuyper on Tuesday night before heading to Lourdes on Saturday.  Jon Harden leads four players averaging in double figures with 14.7 points per game.  Jake Mullin adds 13.3 points per night along with a team-leading 5.0 rebounds per game.  Brad Watterworth (11.3 ppg) and Jay Redman (10.7 ppg) are also scoring more than 10 points per night.

#100: Saturday's game against Lawrence Tech marks the 100th in program history.  They Gray Wolves sport a 54-45 record through the first 99 games, dating back to the inaugural 2010-2011 season.

Home Openers: Lourdes is 3-0 all-time in home openers after defeating Kuyper 72-46 in the first game at Tam-o-Shanter during the 2012-2013 season.  The Gray Wolves downed Madonna 65-62 in the inaugural home game on Nov. 23, 2010 and defeated Siena Heights by three to begin the 2011-2012 campaign.

WHAC Openers: The Gray Wolves are 1-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers during their first two years in the conference.  The Gray Wolves fell 86-56 at Aquinas to begin the 2011-2012 conference campaign before downing Lawrence Tech 53-47 to open up last year's league slate.  This year will mark the first time that Lourdes has begun conference play at home.

Controlling the Paint: The Gray Wolves have outscored all four opponents inside the paint thus far this season.  Lourdes held a 28-10 advantage over Point Park in the lane last Wednesday, the third time this season the Gray Wolves have outscored the opposition by at least 10 points.

Defense Picks Up Where it Left Off: Lourdes played the stingiest defense of any NAIA Division II team during the 2012-2013 season, allowing just 51.3 points per contest while also leading the nation allowing the opposition to shoot just 36.8% from the floor.  Already this season the Gray Wolves rank fourth in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 69.5 points per night.

Making Shots: Eric Worthey is shooting 74.1% from the floor thus far this year on his way to a team-leading 14.8 points per game.  The fifth-year senior has made 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc and is also shooting 75% from the free throw line.

Lourdes Tabbed Fourth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fourth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Northwestern Ohio, and just behind Cornerstone.  Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2013-2014 after winning the conference title two straight seasons.

Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are Elvin Butler and Jake DuPree, both first time captains.

This and That: Lourdes is shooting 50.5% from the floor as a team this season ... Zach Steinmetz is averaging a team-leading 9.0 rebounds per game in his first season with the Gray Wolves ... Jake DuPree and Jerah'me Williams each have nine assists with just four turnovers this year ... DuPree also has a team-leading 10 steals ... Lourdes is outrebounding the opposition by 7.2 boards per game.
