Lourdes Men Roll By Lawrence Tech in WHAC Opener

Box Score

Lourdes led wire to wire on Saturday afternoon in its home opener, cruising past Lawrence Tech 67-44 at Tam-o-Shanter in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams as well.

"It is good to get a win in our conference home opener," head coach Andre Smith said after the game.  "I thought we played hard and together tonight."

The Gray Wolves scored the game's first five points and led 14-3 just over six minutes into the contest.  The Blue Devils pulled within seven, 23-16, at the 7:48 mark of the first half but another 14-3 run by Lourdes put the game out of reach in the first half.  The Gray Wolves led 42-23 at the break.

Lawrence Tech tried to make an early run in the second half, cutting the deficit to 13, 45-32, following a triple at the 15-minute mark, but Lourdes went on another run beginning with its next possession.  A 12-4 spurt pushed the lead to 21, 57-36 with 10 minutes to play and the Gray Wolves allowed just six points over the game's final eight minutes, three of which came on a Blue Devil triple as time expired.

Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) made 7-of-9 shots from the floor to lead Lourdes with 15 points while Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) added 14 points.  Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) was the third Gray Wolf in double figures, tallying 11 points.

Lourdes shot 46.9% from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers while forcing 24 Lawrence Tech miscues.  The Gray Wolves turned those turnovers into 29 points.  Lourdes also outscored Lawrence Tech 28-6 in the paint.

"We did a better job with our decision making tonight," Smith added.  "We had a much better defensive effort than we've had of late."

Jay Redman led Lawrence Tech (2-3, 0-1 WHAC) with 16 points.

Lourdes will remain home on Wednesday evening for another WHAC battle as the Gray Wolves host Michigan-Dearborn.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on BCSN.
