Lawrence Tech Women Tops Lourdes in WHAC Opener

Box Score

Lourdes continued its four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon with the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener, but dropped a 67-62 decision to Lawrence Tech at Tam-o-Shanter.

Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) led Lourdes with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) added 13 points and nine boards.

"Give Lawrence Tech credit today," head coach Karen McConnell said afterwards.  "They really came ready to play today and we did not."

Lawrence Tech started quick, scoring the game's first five points and held a 9-4 advantage five minutes into the contest.  Lourdes answered with an 11-1 run to build a 15-10 advantage at the 11:45 mark.  The Gray Wolves kept the advantage until a Blue Devil lay-in made it 18-17 visitors.

A Katie Pearcy (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid H.S.) triple with 2:38 to play before half to put the Gray Wolves back on top 24-23, but that would be Lourdes last lead of the game.  Lawrence Tech scored the half's final seven points, the last basket coming as the horn sounded, and took a 30-24 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils extended the lead to 10 out of halftime and maintained a five to eight point advantage for the first 10 minutes of the final stanza.  Lourdes was able to close within three, 45-42, at the 8:32 mark after free throws by Blackman and Pearcy but could not get any closer.  A 10-3 run by Lawrence Tech pushed the lead back to 11, and despites Lourdes cutting into the deficit again, could not pull any closer than five the rest of the way.

Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) and Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Sylvania Southview H.S.) each added eight points for Lourdes with Tilden handing out four assists and Scott grabbing seven boards.

Lourdes shot just 32.7% from the floor, committed 17 turnovers, 13 of which came in the first half, and made just 22-of-34 (64.7%) from the free throw line.

"We missed too many bunnies and the free throw line and our first half turnovers really hurt us," McConnell added.  "We also gave up five uncontested threes."

Brenda Davis led Lawrence Tech (2-1, 1-0 WHAC) with 20 points, making all three triples she attempted while Halie Butler added 14 points and eight boards in a reserve role.

Lourdes (2-2, 0-1) will remain home on Tuesday, stepping out of conference action to host Ursuline.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter with the game carried live on BCSN.
