Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: A busy week is ahead for Lourdes University's women's basketball team on the hardwood as the Gray Wolves play three times. Lourdes wraps up a four-game homestand with a pair of games before taking to the road against one of the nation's best. The Gray Wolves host Ursuline in a non-conference game on Tuesday before ending the homestand on Thursday night with a WHAC game against Michigan-Dearborn. On Saturday Lourdes heads to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face #2 Davenport.
Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her first season both on the Lourdes bench
Karen McConnell has a 2-2 (.500) record. Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 282-249 (.531) record in her 21st season. She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
On the Air: Tuesday's game against Ursuline will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem. The game will be replayed on BCSN again at 4 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Tuesday at 10 p.m. as well as on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Thursday's game against Michigan-Dearborn will be broadcast live on BCSN as well. The game will also be replayed on Friday at 4 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. along with Sunday at 4:30 a.m. BCSN2 will show the game on Thursday at 10 a.m. as well as Friday at 7:30 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 0-1 all-time against Ursuline. The Arrows defeated the Gray Wolves 97-85 in Pepper Pike, Ohio on Nov. 22, 2011. This will be Ursuline's first visit to Tam-o-Shanter. Michigan-Dearborn holds a 3-1 series edge over Lourdes. The two teams split last year's meetings, with the Wolverines winning 58-56 in Dearborn, Mich. before Lourdes won 49-42 at Tam-o-Shanter. The series is tied 1-1 all-time at Tam-o-Shanter. Davenport is 4-0 all-time against Lourdes, including 2-0 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Last year the Panthers won 79-61 in Grand Rapids and 90-54 at Tam-o-Shanter.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes posted a 64-52 win over Goshen on Tuesday behind double-doubles from
Tarynn Hampton and
Tiffani Blackman. Hampton had 18 points and 21 boards while Blackman tallied 17 points and 15 rebounds. Lawrence Tech topped the Gray Wolves on Saturday in the WHAC opener 67-62 as Lourdes shot just 32.7% from the floor. Blackman led the Gray Wolves with 17 points and 10 boards.
Scouting Ursuline: The Arrows, a NCAA Division II team, will be playing their first road game of the year at Lourdes on Tuesday. They fell 64-54 to Tiffin last Wednesday in their last game. Tajanee Wells leads the team with 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Jenny Grigsby has added 10.5 points per contest. Erica Huber adds 10.0 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per night.
Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines are still looking for their first win in 2013-2014 after falling 85-42 at Concordia (Mich.) last Saturday. Danielle Cowart is leading Michigan-Dearborn averaging 11.3 points per game while Jalissa Williams adds 9.8 points and 5.8 boards per night. Courtney Teets leads the team on the glass with 6.3 rebounds per game.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers improved to 5-0 on Saturday with a 110-59 victory at Marygrove and head to Cornerstone on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes on Saturday in their home opener. Alison Bouman leads four players in double figures scoring 14.0 points per game while also grabbing a team-leading 9.8 rebounds. Tiesha Stokes adds 13.6 points and 7.4 boards per contest.
Hampton Crashes the Glass: Tarynn Hampton leads all of NAIA Division II averaging 6.5 offensive rebounds per game. The senior pulled down 13 offensive caroms against Goshen on Tuesday and five more against Lawrence Tech. Hampton ranks fifth overall in total rebounding averaging 12.3 rebounds per night.
Twice the Effort: Both
Tiffani Blackman and
Tarynn Hampton registered double-doubles for the Gray Wolves last week. Blackman had two, scoring 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds against Goshen before adding 17 points and 10 boards against Lawrence Tech. Hampton tallied 18 points and 21 rebounds against Goshen as well.
Swatting Shots: Tiffany Scott blocked four shots in Lourdes contest against Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon and now ranks 23rd in the nation averaging 1.5 rejections per game.
Lourdes Tabbed 10th in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Lawrence Tech. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2013-2014 after winning the conference title seven straight seasons.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are
Tiffani Blackman and
Tiffany Scott. Blackman is a two-time team captain while Scott is in her first season as a team captain.
