Men's Basketball Faces Michigan-Dearborn, Davenport This Week

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes continues Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play this week looking to extend its strong start to the season.  The Gray Wolves entertain Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday afternoon before traveling to 10th-ranked Davenport on Saturday.

Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 55-45 (.550) record.  He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.  Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.

On the Air: Wednesday's game against Michigan-Dearborn will be broadcast live on BCSN on Buckeye Cablesystem.  The game will be replayed on BCSN again at 4 a.m. and noon on Thursday as well as at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.  In addition, BCSN2 will show the game on Wednesday at 10 p.m. as well as on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Friday at 5 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  BCSN2 will also show the game on Sunday morning at 4 a.m.

Series Notes: Lourdes is 3-1 all-time against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to the first meeting on Jan. 14, 2012.  The Gray Wolves swept the season series last year, downing the Wolverines 53-31 in Dearborn, Mich. before posting a 62-21 victory at Tam-o-Shanter.  Lourdes holds a 2-0 edge in the series at Tam-o-Shanter.  Davenport is 5-0 all-time against Lourdes in a series that dates back to Jan. 4, 2012.  Last year the Panthers posted a 76-57 win in Grand Rapids, Mich. and a 67-51 triumph at Tam-o-Shanter.  Davenport is 3-0 all-time against Lourdes in Grand Rapids.

Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves face NCAA Division II foe Hillsdale on Wednesday in exhibition action, dropping an 88-64 decision.  Elvin Butler scored 21 points for the Gray Wolves while Zach Steinmetz added 18 points and eight rebounds in the loss.  Lourdes opened WHAC play on Saturday afternoon with a 67-44 victory over Lawrence Tech at Tam-o-Shanter.  Steinmetz paced the Gray Wolves with 15 points while Eric Worthey added 14 more.  

Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines are still looking for their first victory of the season after falling 76-64 at Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday.  Their scheduled game against Great Lakes Christian on Monday night was postponed due to a power outage.  Jamiel Strickland leads the way for Michigan-Dearborn averaging 10.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while Gage Throgmorton has added 7.5 points per night.  As a team the Wolverines are shooting 35.2% from the floor and averaging just 52.8 points per night.

Scouting Davenport: The Panthers remain unbeaten and ranked 10th in the nation following a 102-46 win at Marygrove on Saturday afternoon.  Davenport heads to Cornerstone on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes on Saturday.  Dominez Burnett leads Davenport averaging 21.4 points pre game this season while shooting 61.0% from the floor.  JaVontae Ford adds 14.8 points per night while Nick Gamble has added 10.4 points per game.

On to the Next 100: Lourdes played its 100th game in program history last Saturday, a victory over Lawrence Tech.  The Gray Wolves are 55-45 all-time in program history, and will begin its next 100 games on Wednesday night.

Turning Miscues into Points: Lourdes forced 24 Lawrence Tech turnovers on Saturday afternoon and converted the Blue Devil miscues into 29 points.  The game marked the second time this season Lourdes scored at least 29 points off of turnovers, tallying 32 points off of 24 Kuyper turnovers in the season opener.  Conversely, the Gray Wolves took care of the basketball, committing just 11 turnovers which resulted in five Lawrence Tech points.  

From Long Range: Lourdes started the season making just 7-of-28 (25%) three-point attempts this season over five games.  Over the last two regular season contests, the Gray Wolves have made 12-of-27 (44.4%) from beyond the arc.  Lourdes also drained 4-of-6 triple tries in the exhibition game against Hillsdale last Wednesday night.

Defense Picks Up Where it Left Off: Lourdes played the stingiest defense of any NAIA Division II team during the 2012-2013 season, allowing just 51.3 points per contest while also leading the nation allowing the opposition to shoot just 36.8% from the floor.  Already this season the Gray Wolves rank fifth in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 56.4 points per night.

Making Shots: Eric Worthey is shooting 71.9% from the floor thus far this year on his way to a team-leading 14.6 points per game.  The fifth-year senior has made 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc and is also shooting 75% from the free throw line.

Lourdes Tabbed Fourth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fourth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  Lourdes was picked just ahead of Northwestern Ohio, and just behind Cornerstone.  Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2013-2014 after winning the conference title two straight seasons.

Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are Elvin Butler and Jake DuPree, both first time captains.

This and That: Jerah'me Williams has handed out 13 assists and committed just four turnovers this season ... Lourdes is shooting 49.8% from the floor this year after connecting at just a 43.7% clip last year ... the Gray Wolves are 15th in NAIA Division II averaging 10.2 steals per game.
