#9 Bethel (Ind.) Hands Lourdes Season’s First Loss

Box Score
Lourdes looked poised for an upset of the ninth-ranked team in the country at halftime, but Bethel (Ind.) scored 51 second half points to defeat the Gray Wolves 75-65 on Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Maple City Hoopfest held at Gunden Gymnasium in Goshen, Ind.

Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 24 points and three steals, making 8-of-17 shots from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) added 15 points while Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied his second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards for the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes led the entire way in the opening stanza, scoring six of the game's first seven points.  Bethel cut the advantage to one six times and tied the game twice, but was never able to take the lead.  A 7-1 run by the Gray Wolves to close the half, capped by a triple from Butler gave the Gray Wolves a 31-24 advantage at the break.

After Lourdes scored the first basket of the second half to increase the lead to nine, Bethel scored 14 straight points over a five minute span to take the lead, 38-33.  The Pilots increased the lead to nine, 46-37, with 12:44 to play before Lourdes went on a run.  A 13-4 spurt saw the Gray Wolves tie the game at 50 on a jumper by Butler with 7:49 to play in the game.

The Pilots had one more run in them though, using a 9-2 burst to regain an eight-point advantage, 62-54, with under three and a half minutes to pay, and Lourdes would not get any closer than five the rest of the way.

The Gray wolves shot 42% from the floor but were just 61.8% from the free throw line on the afternoon.

Zach Miller led Bethel (3-0) with 19 points while Ryan Benner added 15 points and Matt Schauss chipped in 11 more.
