Butler Scores 31 but #17 Madonna Rallies Past Lourdes

Box Score
Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) scored 31 points for Lourdes on Wednesday evening, but 17th-ranked Madonna rallied from seven points down in the second half to defeat the Gray Wolves 67-57 at The Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.

Butler made 11-of-16 shots from the floor, including all six of his three-point attempts on the evening, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds for the Gray Wolves in the loss.  Madonna's Bobby Naubert answered Butler's effort with 29 points of his own, making 10-of-15 shots from the floor and all nine of his free throw attempts.

Madonna jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead and held the advantage throughout most of the first half.  The Crusaders were on top 20-15 when Lourdes scored eight straight points, two triples by Butler sandwiched around a lay-in from Noah Guthrie (Glouster, Ohio/Trimble H.S.), which put the Gray Wolves on top.  Lourdes then took a 26-25 lead into the break.

The battle between the top two teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference remained close in the second half until a 7-0 run by Lourdes, all coming via Butler, put the Gray Wolves on top 40-33 with 13:36 to play.  Madonna then went on its big run, a 14-0 spurt, which put the hosts on top for good.  Lourdes was not able to close any closer than five points in the final five minutes of the game.

Butler was the only Gray Wolf to score in double figures as no other player scored more than five points on the evening.  Lourdes shot 41.3% from the floor, but made 8-of-15 three-pointers to keep the game close.

Naubert was the only Madonna (5-3, 4-0 WHAC) player to finish in double figures as well.  The Crusaders shot 53.3% from the field and committed just nine turnovers on the night.

Lourdes (6-2, 3-1) will close out its three-game road trip on Wednesday, December 4, when the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
