Quick Start Leads Lourdes to Win at Point Park

Box Score
Lourdes University scored the game's first five points on Wednesday evening and never trailed as the Gray Wolves defeated Point Park 65-54 at the CCAC South Gym in West Mifflin, Pa. to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Gray Wolves extended its lead to eight, 18-10, just over seven minutes into the contest before the Pioneers crawled back.  Point Park pulled within three with 3:25 to play before halftime, but the Gray Wolves scored the final eight points of the stanza to take a 35-24 lead into the break.

The lead grew to 15 following a three-pointer by Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) at the 15:22 mark which capped a 15-3 run spanning both halves.  After the Pioneers closed within seven one more time, another 16-4 run by the Gray Wolves put the visitors on top by 19, 58-39 with 6:17 to play.  Point Park had one more run in them, scoring 12 straight points to pull within seven with just over a minute remaining, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Worthey and Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led the way with 13 points for the Gray Wolves while Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) added 10 points.  Lourdes shot 48.9% from the floor for the game.

Nick Brown led all scorers with 21 points for Point Park (0-1) while Gabe McNeal added 12 more.  The Pioneers shot just 39.1% from the field and Lourdes forced 20 Pioneer turnovers.  Point Park led NAIA Division II in scoring last year, averaging 93.2 points per game, but was held well below that average on Wednesday.

Lourdes (3-1) will have a week off before concluding the season-opening five game road trip next Wednesday evening, traveling to Hillsdale, Mich. to face Hillsdale in an exhibition game.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jesse Philips Arena.
