Playing in its final game before the holiday season, #25 Lourdes fell 58-49 to #9 Davenport on Monday afternoon in the fifth place game of the Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament held at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill.

The non-conference game between the two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foes was the final one of the 2013 calendar year for the Gray Wolves.

A defensive first half saw Lourdes build a 10-4 lead eight-and-a-half minutes into the game. The Panthers answered with eight straight points of their own to take a two-point lead with under seven minutes left before the break. Davenport then ended the first half with 13 straight points over the final 5:27 to take a 25-14 lead at halftime.

Lourdes shot just 22.2% (6-of-27) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and was just 2-of-5 at the charity stripe.

The run extended to 21-2 over the first three minutes of the second half as Davenport opened up a 33-16 lead. Lourdes battled back, closing to within four, after an 18-4 run, pulling the Gray Wolves to within 42-38. The Gray Wolves could not get any closer though.

Lourdes shot 68.4% from the field in the second half while trying to make the comeback, but committed 17 turnovers on the afternoon which led to 16 Panther points.

Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) led Lourdes with 12 points while
Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) added 10 more.Â
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added eight points and a team-leading seven boards while
Jerome Talton (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw H.S.) also scored eight points. Â

Kevin Rich led Davenport (12-3) with 12 points while JaVontae Ford and Nick Gamble added 11 points each.

Lourdes (10-5) will have nearly two weeks off for the holidays before returning to WHAC play at home on Jan. 4 when the Gray Wolves host Marygrove. Tip-off at Tam-o-Shanter is set for 3 p.m.
