Dukes Layup Pushes #18 Lourdes Past Aquinas

Box Score
Ron Dukes (Saint Louis, Mo./North County Christian H.S.) scored with 4.1 seconds remaining on Wednesday evening to lead 18th-ranked Lourdes to a 57-55 victory over Aquinas at the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"Aquinas is a tough team that is much better than their record shows," head coach Andre Smith said.  "We came out flat tonight and didn't have a lot of energy until the last four minutes or so.  It shows a lot about our character though to stay calm and battle back from the deficit.  We executed well down the stretch."

Lourdes trailed the Saints 28-22 at halftime before starting the second half on a 7-1 run to tie the game less than three minutes into the stanza.  Aquinas rebuilt its lead, taking a 52-42 lead into the final six minutes.  Seven straight Lourdes points by Jake DuPree (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) helped cut the deficit in half, 54-49, with 4:14 to play.

An Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) basket cut the lead to two and DuPree tied the game at 55 with 1:34 to play after a pair of free throws, and a defensive stop by the Gray Wolves followed, leading to Dukes' basket come on a pass from Jerah'me Williams (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell H.S.) on Lourdes final possession.  Aquinas had one last look to tie, but missed inside.

DuPree led Lourdes with 13 points while Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) added 12 more.  Steinmetz also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as Lourdes outrebounded the Saints 38-28.  Butler (Akron, added 11 points for the Gray Wolves.

Kollin Kazen, Ryan Schall, and Jake Bullock each scored 11 points to pace Aquinas (3-6, 2-3 WHAC) in the loss.

Lourdes (7-2, 4-1) will return home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves welcome Concordia (Mich.) to Tam-o-Shanter.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. against the Cardinals.
