Lourdes Women Upended at Home by Cornerstone Saturday

Box Score
Despite four players tallying double figures on Saturday afternoon, Lourdes was unable to pull out a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory at home, falling 59-49 to Cornerstone at Tam-o-Shanter.

Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Sylvania Southview H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 12 points, making 5-of-8 shots from the floor while Lauren Tilden (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.) added 11 points, including three three-pointers.  Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) also registered 10 points.

Free throws proved to be the difference in the game on Saturday, as Lourdes connected on just 14-of-27 (51.9%) while Cornerstone made 18-of-22 (81.8%).  The Gray Wolves shot better from the floor than the Golden Eagles, connecting at a 38.5% rate, including making 5-of-11 from three-point range, while Cornerstone shot 35.7% from the field, but made just 1-of-12 from long range.

Both teams struggled shooting from the floor early, making a combined 6-of-26 attempts in the first nine minutes of the game, but Lourdes held an early 9-7 lead.  Cornerstone scored three straight buckets though to take a four-point advantage, the largest of the game to that point.  The Gray Wolves scored five consecutive points to retake the lead 14-13, holding Cornerstone scoreless for four-and-a-half minutes, but that would be their final lead of the game.

Cornerstone took a 25-21 lead into the locker room but extended the lead out of the break.  An 8-0 run over three minutes pushed the Golden Eagle advantage to 11, 35-24, at the 14:44 mark, and the visitors would maintain the double digit lead for most of the second half.  Trailing by as many as 15, Lourdes went on an 11-4 run over four minutes to close within eight in the final minute, but could not get any closer the rest of the way.

Katelyn Cousins was the only Cornerstone (12-5, 7-3 WHAC) player to finish the game in double figures but she led all scorers with 19 points.  Ashley Nidermayer had eight points and 10 rebounds, helping the Golden Eagles to a 44-27 edge on the glass, including a 17-6 advantage on the offensive end.  The visitors outscored Lourdes 32-12 in the paint on the day.

Lourdes (4-13, 2-8) will reach the halfway point in WHAC play on Wednesday evening, traveling to Southfield, Mich. to face Lawrence Tech.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Don Ridler Fieldhouse.
