Lourdes Upsets #10 Davenport for Second Time This Season

Lourdes snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon, posting the Gray Wolves' second victory of the season against 10th-ranked Davenport, 75-71, at Tam-o-Shanter.
 
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied his eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds.  The redshirt-freshman made 9-of-12 shots from the floor on the afternoon and scored 14 of his points in the first half.
 
The game was physical throughout with a total of 54 fouls whistled to go along with four flagrant fouls, three technical fouls, and two ejections.  Lourdes went to the free throw line 49 times, making 36 (73.5%) while Davenport was 23-of-30 (76.7%) from the charity stripe.
 
Davenport scored the game's first five points, but Lourdes answered with a 16-3 run over the next six minutes to take an eight-point lead with 12:12 to play in the first half.  The Gray Wolves would not trail the rest of the afternoon.  The lead grew to 13, 23-10, at the 8:33 mark on a tip-in by Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.).  Lourdes would take a 36-24 lead into the break.
 
Lourdes limited the Panthers to just 26.1% shooting (6-of-23) from the floor in the first half, including just 1-of-10 from three-point range.
 
Lourdes built its largest lead, 16, early in the second half, 40-24, and maintained a double digit advantage for the first 12 minutes of the final stanza.  Leading 52-36 at the 11:26 mark, the Gray Wolves surrendered nine straight points as Davenport cut its deficit to seven with eight minutes remaining.  Lourdes pushed the lead back to 10 at the six-minute mark, but Davenport kept fighting back.
 
It was an eight-point advantage, 69-61, with 37 seconds left before the Panthers made one last charge, cutting the lead to just two, 73-71, with nine seconds to play.  Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) made two free throws with three seconds left to secure the upset victory.
 
Jerome Talton (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw H.S.) came off of the bench to score 17 points for the Gray Wolves while Butler added 11 points.  Jerah'me Williams (Youngstown, Ohio/Campbell H.S.) chipped in 10 points in a reserve role as well.
 
Lourdes outrebounded Davenport 40-30 on the night led by Steinmetz's 15 boards.
 
Nick Gamble led Davenport (16-4, 9-3 WHAC) with 18 points off of the bench while Braima Hai and JaVontae Ford each added 13 points.  DeArmond Davis had 12 points and nine boards for the Panthers.
 
Lourdes (12-8, 7-5) will remain home Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Madonna at Tam-o-Shanter.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
