Lourdes Wins Twice in Cincinnati on Sunday

Lourdes wrapped up play at the College of Mount Saint Joseph Tournament on Sunday afternoon, posting a pair of victories at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The Gray Wolves defeated Rust 25-4, 25-16, 25-14 in their first match before defeating the host Lions 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 in the finale.
 
Lourdes cruised in the first match of the day against Rust.  The Gray Wolves hit .800 in the opening set, tallying 12 kills on 15 swings without committing an error.  Lourdes scored the first seven points of the match.  After leading 13-4, Bryan Downs (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon H.S.) served the final 12 points of the set.
 
Garrett Jones (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas H.S. had four aces as part of a 9-0 Lourdes run in set two as the Gray Wolves took control.  Set three saw Ryan Ferkel's (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly H.S.) service help the Gray Wolves to six straight points.  Downs and Jones then spearheaded an 8-1 run from the service line as Lourdes led by double digits most of the final set.
 
Lourdes hit .290 as a team in the victory, led by 14 kills from Chris Lockwood (San Diego, Calif./Poway H.S.) on 17 swings.  The senior finished the match hitting .765.  Brad Miller (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.) had nine kills and added eight digs defensively.  Ferkel handed out 20 assists over the final two sets.
 
"It was nice to get some different guys some time on the court," head coach Greg Reitz stated after the opening match.  "It was nice to play against a team that was having fun while playing, and we respect the fact that Rust is still learning the game."
 
CJ Rilveria (Kula, Hawaii/Kekaulike H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with nine digs while Jones and Downs each had four aces in the match.  Lourdes finished the contest with 14 aces total.
 
Gino Pierre led Rust (0-4) with seven kills and four digs while Jamaal James tallied three blocks for the Bearcats.
 
In the second match against Mount Saint Joseph, Lourdes fell behind early.  The Lions hit .429 with just three errors in the opening set to earn the win.  Lourdes bounced back in set two, holding the tournament hosts to a .000 hitting mark.  The Gray Wolves had five blocks in the second stanza, helping to even the match.
 
Lourdes never trailed in the third set, using an early 4-0 run to take control.  The fourth set was much different as there were 11 ties and four lead changes, before the Gray Wolves took the lead for good at 13-12 after a 5-1 run.
 
Jo'Lon Clark (Compton, Calif./Long Beach Poly H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves with 14 kills while Lockwood added 13 on just 19 swings, hitting .632 for the match.  Steve Barcus (Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon H.S.) handed out 38 assists while Lockwood and Rilveria had three aces each.  Lockwood also had eight blocks while Miller tallied 12 digs.
 
"Chris was very effective all day long for us," Reitz added after match two.  Jo'Lon passed and hit well.  It had a good effort all the way around."
 
Alex Vohland led Mount Saint Joseph (1-3) with 17 kills and 10 digs.
 
Lourdes (3-1) will have nine days off before returning to the court on Jan. 29 for its home opener.  Siena Heights will visit Tam-o-Shanter in the 7 p.m. contest.
