Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes travels to Adrian, Mich. and the campus of Siena Heights University this weekend for a pair of games in the Maple City Classic. The Gray Wolves will face Judson on Friday evening before tipping off against Akron Wayne on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 67-60 (.528) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes will be meeting both Judson and Akron Wayne on the hardwood for the first time in program history.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves trailed by as many as 22 points with 13:24 to play in the game on Saturday before pulling to within one in the final minute. Lourdes was unable to complete the comeback though, and fell in the season opener 65-63 at Spring Arbor.Â
Zach Steinmetz led the Gray Wolves with 29 points and 11 rebounds while
Stephen Couvillion added nine points. Xavier Prather led the Cougars with 16 points and nine boards.
Scouting Judson: The Eagles are still looking for their first win of the season after falling to both Mount Mercy and Clarke last weekend in their own Judson University Classic. Will Woodhouse leads Judson in scoring through two games, averaging 14.5 points per night while Andrew Eck has added 11.5 point per game. Troy Jackson has cleared the glass, grabbing 8.5 rebounds per contest. Judson is shooting just 34.6% from the floor and 23.5% from three-point range on the year, but is connecting at a 74.4% clip from the free throw line.
Scouting Akron Wayne: The Warriors have yet to open their 2014-2015 season, but will do so on Wednesday (Nov. 5) at Ohio State-Mansfield. Akron Wayne will also face Siena Heights on Friday before playing Lourdes on Saturday.
Previously in the Maple City Hoopfest: Lourdes has participated in the Maple City Hoopfest twice in program history. The Gray Wolves split a pair of games in 2010, falling to #1 Saint Francis (Ind.) before defeating Holy Cross (Ind.). In 2011, Lourdes posted a two-point win over Point Park before dropping a five-point decision to host Siena Heights.
Lourdes in Openers: The Gray Wolves fell to 2-3 all-time in season openers with last weekend's loss at Spring Arbor. Of the three season-opening setbacks, two have come by just two points (2011, 2014).
Steinmetz Picks Up Where He Left Off: After tallying 16 double-doubles for the Gray Wolves in 2013-2014,
Zach Steinmetz opened the 2014-2015 in the same fashion. The junior forward tallied 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to pace Lourdes at Spring Arbor. Steinmetz connected on 12-of-16 shots from the floor, including his first career three-pointer.
Newcomers Contribute From the Beginning: Stephen Couvillion,
Brillon Pritchett, and
E.J. Blackwell all made starts for the Gray Wolves in their first contest at Lourdes. Pritchett sat out last season as a redshirt while Couvillion and Blackwell both transferred to the school prior to the season. Couvillion tallied nine points while Blackwell added eight more as the pair finished second and third on the team in scoring.
Lending a Helping Hand: Jake DuPree handed out a career-high eight assists for the Gray Wolves in the season opener. The fifth-year senior guard committed just three turnovers while playing 36 minutes. DuPree's previous best was seven assists at Cornerstone back on Jan. 12, 2013.
A Tale of Two Halves: Lourdes struggled defensively in the opening 20 minutes at Spring Arbor, surrendering 43 first half points. The Cougars shot 57.7% from the floor, including 5-of-11 from three-point range in the stanza. In the second half, the Gray Wolves held Spring Arbor to 35% shooting, including just 2-of-7 from long range, and 22 total points. Â
Taking Care of the Basketball: Lourdes handed out 18 assists as a team against Spring Arbor while turning the ball over just 13 times. Last year the Gray Wolves averaged just 9.8 assists per contest while committing 14.7 miscues per night. Â
Struggling From the Line: Lourdes shot just 55.0% from the free throw line in the season opener.Â
Noah Guthrie and
E.J. Blackwell both went 2-for-2 while the other four players that attempted free throws combined to go 7-for-16.
Lourdes Tabbed Fourth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fourth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Madonna, and just behind Northwestern Ohio. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2014-2015 after finishing runner-up last year while Cornerstone, last year's champion, was tabbed second.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2014-2015 are
Jake DuPree and
Zach Steinmetz. DuPree is a two-time team captain while Steinmetz is serving as a captain for the first time.
This and That: This week's two games conclude a season-opening three-game road trip for Lourdes ... six different Gray Wolves made their team debut in the season opener ... Lourdes outscored Spring Arbor in the paint 36-24 in the opener.
