Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: After having a three-game winning streak snapped last Saturday afternoon, Lourdes returns to the hardwood for a pair of contests this week. The Gray Wolves will "host" Akron Wayne on Wednesday evening on the campus of Adrian College in non-conference action before returning to WHAC play on Saturday with a game at Madonna.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his fifth season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach,
Andre Smith has a 74-62 (.544) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 1-0 all-time against Akron Wayne after defeating the Warriors 90-35 on Nov. 8 of this season in the Maple City Classic hosted by Siena Heights.Â
Zach Steinmetz scored 22 points to lead four Gray Wolves in double figures in the victory. Lourdes and Madonna have split their 10 previous meetings 5-5 but the Crusaders have won the last three contests between the two schools. Madonna posted a 67-57 win in Livonia, Mich. last year before downing the Gray Wolves 61-49 at Tam-o-Shanter. Lourdes holds a 3-2 series edge in games played in Livonia.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes shot 81.3% from the free throw line on Wednesday evening, including an 18-for-21 performance in the second half to score a 68-65 victory at home against Aquinas.Â
Aaron Ashley came off of the bench to score 19 points while
Zach Steinmetz and
E.J. Blackwell added 14 points each. On Saturday, Lourdes was unable to hold onto a halftime lead, dropping a 74-62 decision at Indiana Tech. Ashley tallied 15 points while Blackwell added 10 more for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Akron Wayne: The Warriors are still looking for their first victory of the year after falling to Malone's JV team last Wednesday night. Akron Wayne has played three games against WHAC foes this year, falling to Lourdes, Siena Heights, and Indiana Tech. Brian Zeleznik leads Akron Wayne scoring 13.0 points per game on the year while James Hunter adds 11.8 points per night. Jon Hariharan led the Warriors in the first meeting against Lourdes, scoring 11 points.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders snapped a three-game losing skid last Saturday with a 67-65 victory at home against Lawrence Tech. Khalil Malone leads Madonna in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game. Donald Owens adds 10.5 points per contest while leading the Crusaders in rebounding, grabbing 8.6 boards per contest. As a team Madonna ranks 15th nationally, outrebounding opponents by 8.6 boards per night. Among the Nation's Top Defenses: Lourdes has given up just 56.0 points per game this season, a mark that ranks third in NAIA Division II. The Gray Wolves finished in the top-five nationally in scoring defense each of the last three seasons as well. Lourdes has also limited the opposition to just 37.4% shooting from the floor this season, the third best mark in the country.
Ashley Produces Off of the Bench: Aaron Ashley may be a regular coming off of the bench, but he is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per game. Ashley led Lourdes in scoring in both contests last week, tallying 19 points against Aquinas, including a 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line. The redshirt-junior went 6-of-9 from the floor on Saturday, scoring 15 points in the loss at Indiana Tech.
Lots of Steals: Jake DuPree has already tallied 36 steals for the Gray Wolves this season after recording 10 thefts in the two games last week. His 3.60 swipes per contest rank third nationally in NAIA Division II. DuPree has four or more steals in six of his last seven games.
Quite a Ratio: Senior
Jake DuPree has handed out 37 assists (3.7 per game) while committing just 14 turnovers this season. He has not committed a turnover in any of the last three games, a stretch of 110 minute of action.
Shooting Well Equal Victories: Lourdes is a perfect 6-0 this season when shooting a higher percentage from the floor than the opposition, but just 1-3 when shooting worse from the field. On the season the Gray Wolves are shooting at a 45.7% clip from the field and a 39.8% rate from three-point range. The opposition is shooting just 37.4% overall from the floor and at a 33.6% clip from beyond the arc.
Cleaning Up the Glass: Zach Steinmetz ranks third in the nation grabbing 4.3 offensive rebounds per game this year for the Gray Wolves. The team's leading rebounder overall as well, he ranks 16th nationally pulling down 9.5 caroms per contest.
Lourdes Tabbed Fourth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fourth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Madonna, and just behind Northwestern Ohio. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2014-2015 after finishing runner-up last year while Cornerstone, last year's champion, was tabbed second.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2014-2015 are
Jake DuPree and
Zach Steinmetz. DuPree is a two-time team captain while Steinmetz is serving as a captain for the first time.
This and That: Lourdes has committed just 11.9 turnovers per game this season ... the Gray Wolves are limiting teams to just 25.9 points in the first half ...
