Northwestern Ohio and Lourdes combined for just 37 first half points on Wednesday evening, but it was the Racers offense that posted 37 points alone in the second half, defeating the Gray Wolves 57-48 at Tam-o-Shanter.
Lourdes shot just 29.6% from the floor for the evening, making just 4-of-19 (21.1%) three-pointers, and committed 15 turnovers. Northwestern Ohio finished the night at 41.1% from the field, but shot just 33.3% in the first half.
After Lourdes scored the first two free throws of the game, it was Northwestern Ohio that tallied eight straight to take the lead for good, holding the Gray Wolves without a field goal for the first 5:24. The Racers never held a lead of more than six points in the first half though, and Lourdes fought back to within one just before halftime before heading into the locker room trailing 20-17.
A 10-3 run by the Racers midway through the second half increased their advantage to 11, 38-27, with 8:46 to play. Northwestern Ohio's lead grew to as many as 16, 49-33, with 3:25 remaining before Lourdes made a run. A 12-3 spurt over 2:40 pulled the Gray Wolves to within seven following a
Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) layup with 45 seconds to play. Lourdes had the basketball following an immediate turnover by UNOH, but could not cut into the deficit any more.
Hampton led the Gray Wolves with 13 points while
Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban H.S.) added 11 more.
Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) gave Lourdes three players in double figures, finishing the night with 10 points.
Lauren Hopfner led all scorers for Northwestern Ohio (14-13, 11-8 WHAC) with 18 points while Sammi Dervisevic added 15 points and six assists.
Lourdes (6-20) will finish the road portion of the season on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. as the Gray Wolves face #24 Cornerstone. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
