Butler’s Buzzer Beater Lifts Lourdes over Aquinas on Senior Day

Box Score
On Senior Day it was only appropriate that one of the first two four-year seniors in program history provided the heroics as Elvin Butler (Akron, Ohio/East H.S.) hit a game-winning jumper with 1.0 seconds remaining, capping a 9-0 run, to lift Lourdes to a 59-57 victory over Aquinas at the Student Health and Activities Center on the campus of Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio.

Butler hit a 16-foot jumper from the right elbow to give Lourdes its second buzzer-beating victory over the Saints this year as fellow senior Ron Dukes (Saint Louis, Mo./North County Christian H.S.) beat the horn and the Saints back on Dec. 4 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Lourdes trailed 36-24 at the half and was still down 10, 44-34, with 14:30 to play in the game.  A 12-3 run pulled the Gray Wolves within one at the nine-minute mark following a three-point play by Butler.  Aquinas answered with the next seven points to rebuild an eight-point lead with under six minutes to play.

The Saints lead was still seven, 57-50, with 2:47 to play before Lourdes made its final comeback.  Dukes made a pair of free throws and Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) split a pair to bring the Gray Wolves within four.  Steinmetz then had a putback dunk at the 1:46 mark to make it a two-point game.  After Aquinas missed two free throws, Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) scored inside to tie the game at 57 with 50 seconds remaining.

Nick Robertson (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) blocked an Austin Semple lay-up and Steinmetz grabbed the rebound with 27 seconds left.  Lourdes called time out to set up the last play, and Butler took control, draining the game-winner.

The first half was close for the first 17 minutes, with Aquinas holding just a 26-24 lead.  The Saints closed the stanza on a 10-0 run over the final 2:06 though, giving them the 12-point lead at the break.

Butler finished with a game-high 19 points while Steinmetz added a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.  Worthey also scored 10 points as Lourdes shot 43.1% from the floor.  The Gray Wolves committed just five turnovers on the afternoon.

Jake Bullock led Aquinas (15-15, 12-10 WHAC) with 13 points while Austin Semple added 10 more.  Kolin Kazen grabbed 10 rebounds as the Saints outrebounded Lourdes 31-27.  Aquinas committed 15 turnovers though that the Gray Wolves turned into 26 points.

Lourdes (16-14, 11-11 WHAC) will head into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament after finishing in a tie for sixth place.  The league will announce the postseason pairings after the entire league slate has been completed, with the quarterfinals taking place on Wednesday night.
